Banners

I was just curious, how many of you out there use banners on a regular basis.

Also, any comments on why you do/don't use them as well as any tactical advice/comments would be interesting to see.

For me, I tend to use them only in large games where I am going to stay relatively put, i.e. defensive, or when the scenario allows the option.

I think that banners are very vulnerable

well i do occasionally, generally only in big game and/or i have alot of troops as i don't feel they pay for their points in small games

If I'm playing a game ovr 300pts I hardley ever play without one but i hardley ever use more than one.
People tend to make the mistake of having right next to their hero just 'cause it looks cool, but i form a line two men thick, shields in front, spears in back, hero in centre and banner directly behind him or her as they will be one of the last to fall.
This tactic is usually reliable...usually :lol:

Interesting question, and something I've also been thinking about lately.

I use them if I suspect that the troop/scenario/tactics combination will allow or force me to keep my models close together. For infantry, I take a hero and three warriors on his both sides with possibly spearmen behind them. If I think I can use that formation and I have the points to spare, I add a banner. If not, the banner stays home.

With cavalry, I take a hero and maybe four other riders. If I think I can and will keep them as a tight group, I add a banner bearer. Combined arms groups (infantry and cavalry) tend to get separated easily.

I still haven't figured out if I should take a banner for those infantry troops that can't take spears. In principle, without spears it would be better to try to spread the battle to smaller skirmishes but all scenarios and opponents don't support this.

Another thing to consider is the Fight value of the front line troops. If you have higher F than your opponent, you should theoretically benefit more from the banner's effect, but this is already taken into the banner's cost (e.g. elf and Uruk banners cost more).

I have yet to use a banner with cavalry for this very reason. I have recently tried to hold back on letting my calvary run wild, keeping them in reserve until I can get the infantry in position and then use the cavalry for controling and exploiting the flanks. I think a banner in this case would be very useful... looks like I'll have to convert one

well i think the main times i use them are win i face superior forces for enstance orcs vrs elfs other wise look at my coments in tatic digusions

From Experiance if you are looking to sit and defend in a formation I.E the shield wall Banners are excellent, as long as you keep 1-2 warriors in base contact to pick the banner up if its bearer falls and a hero positioned infront of it.

For your own personel experiance you should try to use them and find what works best for you.

In my appinion a banner is something very valuable to have in any game. I will usually have one or two banners in my force. First to give all of my units the re-roll (just finished a bettle today aginst a friend of mine and he had no banners and well i had 3 and i kep re-rolling and beating his units hehehehehehehehehehehehehe) Also for more personal reasons is that if you are thinking into the movie do you relise how many banners are around? tons. and I always like seeing my banners out on the field.

I agree with KarlHaldir...always keep a few troops in base contact with the banner to pick it up if the carrier dies.

But if you play Haradrim and have a Mumak in your army, don't spend the extra points on a banner, as the Mumak itself counts as a banner (although few people ever remember this rule)!

I don't paly alot but I think that the banners are usefull for encouraging you troups I think that is usefull in an army! (they can roll anothe dice once more) that rule can decide one match!

Usually I use them in big armies! but why not in a 300 point match? that way the can be more usefull cause there are a few soldiers.

Try that out!!!!

I usually use 1 or 2 banners in my force always because
(1) they look cool
(2)re-rolls are useful for me when I play against large armies.
(3)they help against cavalry as it means we have the same amount of dice rolls in a fight

I need to know what exactly banners do. Because what i though it is was theat you could re-roll on one dice, once per turn. But then the moria drum lets you re-roll every fight, but then, one guy siad that it gives you and extra dice in combat. So im prett confused.

I use them alot, but I play elves (obviuosly) and they seem to benefit the most from banners, especially high elves because of thier 5 or 6 defence.

Hmm... I would generally take a banner in games that are over 500 points. The rerolls don't do that much, it's the fright factor that is valuable. Your opponent will generally be over-scared of banners, and so devote excess rescources to getting rid of them. That's why I think the Goblin Drum is a waste of points. The only decent thing it does is reduce and increase courage.

I always take a banner in battle above 200 points, as I have found them to be infinitely useful. The re-rolls are great, and save many of my warrior's lives.

But another thing I like to do is send out the banner and a few fairly tough warriors, as enemies are scared of banners most of the time. This splits up their forces, allowing you to pounce on one of them.
