Thanks for comments!

Great ballista, it may just be the photo but some parts like the wood on the ballista and cloth on the dwarfs look a little flat? Perhaps another highlight or 2?

The ballista looks little bit better in reality, but you are right. The highlight should be more contrast. This is fortunately something quite easy to correct :)

I am drawn to the slightly random postings - a bit of this and that. Very nice painting - I like the hobbit with the bow - the usual expression, customarily rendered in a sort of English West Country accent is 'Get orf moi larrnnd!!!' (Get off my land)

Cannot believe it's been so long since the last update

In the last few months, I had awful lot of work, but I've become also very excited about big battles - see my battle report here http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29915

As dwarfs lack some tactical options like cavalry, I've decided to push forward my Haradrim. I've spent two days converting Harad riders to Serpent riders, and here is the result.

Hope you like it!

The next step is to find proper shields. In Two Towers, Gollum says that Haradrim use "round shields, yellow and black with big spikes". Perhaps some of the Warhammer marauder shields?

I thought you had disappeared, anyway, great to see you back and you haven't lost any of your impressive sculpting skills.

Not at all, Gandlaf, and as total Tolkien fanatic, I doubt I ever will!

I have just lot of work occasionally (& was also doing my driver's license this autumn), and it was difficult to find spare time to make pictures or write a battle report :)

Very nice indeed, those should certainly stand out as the (somewhat) elite guys.

Any chance you need a few more of those 'backpacks'? Got about 8 spare I think, so if you happen to have a use for them...

Thanks for your offer, but I think I will be happy with these 6 Serpent riders. I still have 6 other Haradrim riders, but they will stay as common horsemen :)

It seems I have found excellent shields for my Haradrim:

It comes from a small company run by several talented sculptors from Czech Republic. Highly recommended!

Finally decided for the Warhammer marauder shields. They are smaller and they fit nicely to the "cruel Haradrim".

This is actually my first rider for LOTR at all! :)

The conversions are incredible, well done! 8)
The rider looks very nice too, although he is a bit to monocrome for my taste. A few gems or leather straps would break up the gold nicely I think. The Warhamer Shield looks alright, but I am not too fund of the sleign head and would have preferred the Dwarven Shields to be honest.
When I remember correctly Sam feels sorry for the Haradrim in the books because he doesn't know whether he was forced to (in the film done by Faramir), so I think the head doesn't fit Tolkien's vision that well...

Cheers,
Bennet

Thank you!

Son of Fundin: I would also prefer the dwarf shields, but they proved to be 2 mm bigger than the marauder shields unfortunately. Its just too big for those riders. I had some issues to find a nice looking angle even with the smaller ones.

I agree that Tolkien captures Haradrim not as pure evil, but rather as misguided (the same applies to Dunlendings as well). I've always found very touching Sam's words about the fallen warrior in Ithilien. I guess one can feel something from Tolkien's own experience in WW1 in this passage. However, I think that Haradrim could be pretty cruel, as that's what they are called in the books. The long war between Harad and Gondor made them bitter enemies, and the war of the Ring was full of atrocities we have only a glimpse of in the books (severed heads thrown in Minas Tirith for example). In any case, the rest of the knights have normal shields without any heads attached :)

----

Also: have you noticed how many amazing projects are on the forum? Visiting The One Ring after one month means going through several pages of great stuff in the WIP section. I am sorry I don't have time to comment to every project I would like...

Finally finished the unit - my interpretation of Serpent riders / Haradrim knights. Converting them took me ages, but I am quite happy how they turned out.

The blue banner works really well as a contrast to the riders.
