I thought I'd start a WIP thread, having just based a bunch of new minis with river sand and slate.

I started stripping the captain of my previous attempt at undercoating him by leaving him in some dettol and scrubbing the paint off later. I think I left him in too long though, because he's gone a bit rubbery. Damn.

Oki doki, first update. I've finished undercoating 12 of the dwarves, as well as the Orc Captain. This Grim Hammer almost done. I just need to highlight the brown cloth on his arms and between his legs, and then base him. Painting the chainmail is difficult. If I drybrush it some of the metal paint gets into the cracks between the links and makes it all blend together, but if I paint each individually they sort of lose their shape and become round-ish. I think I put the primer on a bit thick and that's why I can't get the right shape around the detail. I'll see how it goes for the next 11 dwarves.

For his base I'm thinking something winter-related. I have a tub of GW snow lying around which I've barely used, so this'll be a great opportunity to test it out.

Back of the model looks good but the front looks too dark to notice any details, i know its the ohotograph. Good work

Must...get...grim...hammers...
Lovely work on these. The front photo is dark so I'm picturing how the front would be based on the back, back to front in a way !

Thanks for all the comments guys!

I'm working on fixing the lighting in my room. At the moment it's hard getting a good picture which isn't too dark, but also isn't too bright that it obscures the details.

So far I've completed two more dwarves in the same style as the first. Painting the thin line of silver on their armour is tough, but I think I'm improving with it.

This is a fourth dwarf I did as a test model. He's had a different shade of brown put on the brown cloth of his armour. This might be the colour I use of the other three, but I'm still deciding at this point.

Tough decision which scheme to go with. Both are excellent.

That red scheme is excellent! Would go well with Balin.

I always thought the Browns and reds with those models, and to contrast the silver armor, looks great.

Nearly finished the next two grim hammers, one of which is my entry for the January painting competition. I just need to finish painting their beards and the brown and grey on their cloth. I think I prefer the dark brown to the reddish brown tbh.

I've also started progress on some goblins for the dwarves to fight. This is them having just been washed with Reikland Fleshshade. All they need now is some highlights on the flesh and armour. I didn't base these ones with sand/gravel before undercoating, unlike the dwarves.
