Welcome to the Bi-monthly Sculpting and Converting challenge. This time the subject matter will fall under....

Battle of the Five Armies

Image

This can be absolutely anything from the final movie that you choose, good or evil.

In this challenge you have several options to take part:
- Sculpt from scratch (starting with or without armature/metal wire/...)
- Convert an existing miniature (to a new or another character or race/region, to change it's situation, rank, pose, wargear, ...)
You may sculpt/convert more than one character should you choose to do so but please bear in mind only 4 finished pictures can be submit for the vote.
Only one entry per person per challenge. So choose carefully!

2. To enter the Sculpting & Converting Challenge, the miniature you are converting must not be converted nor painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-converted'.
Re-converting an already converted miniature is NOT allowed!!
When sculpting from scratch, you must picture proof this with your blank armature/metal wire/... as well as a work-in-progress-picture as valid proof.
All "proof-pictures" MUST either have the announcement-screen of the running challenge in it's background, or contain a small note with the announced theme and date written on.

3. You may join the Sculpting & Converting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed work by midnight GMT of JANUARY 31ST 2015 . WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.
You are allowed to use any sort of sculpting epoxy, as well as scratch build materials (such as metal wire, plasticard, rivets, chains, ...).
You are allowed to use parts from other miniatures (such as weapons, heads, banners, arms, horses, ...).
Your final work must stay UNPAINTED and ideally contain 4 pictures; showing FRONT, BACK, LEFT and RIGHT side. Final pictures MUST NOT be submitted using the attachment format. If you want them in the voting poll then please link them across from an image hosting site such as photobucket or imageshack. If you do not know how to do this, PM a moderator.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed sculpts/conversions. Votes should be cast not simply on sculpting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of techniques, artist improvement, originality etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to improve their sculpting skills and to encourage creativity onto their shelves.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next Sculpting & Converting Challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive challenges.

Good luck to you. That is quite the undertaking for a six week challenge!

Image

the base cut out pre arm work
Image

finally covering most of the beast
Image
a bit of breast inhancement

I'm not expecting to do well here, but since I plan on converting a few of the new Trolls and Orcs/Goblins from the Hobbit movie, I thought I'd might as well have a go. Here are my proof pics, the first one shows all the various parts including Mordor/Isengard Troll box, Goblin Town Goblin sprue, Uruk-hai warriors, extra troll parts, Cave Troll and various shields and weapons:

Image

The second pic is a close-up of the sheet of paper which proves the date, the picture were taken much earlier in the day and it is now after midnight hence it looking like yesterday's date:

Image

The plan is to have 3 Gundabad Trolls based on their appearance in the film, 2 Mordor Troll sized ones and a Cave Troll sized one, 12 Goblin Mercenaries led by a Mercenary Captain (converted from Grinnah) and 6 of those Half Troll thing which were at the vanguard of Bolg's army.

Is my bard conversion valid? I took the proof pic for the painting challenge after I finished the alteration, but missed that deadline- but it's the one that was only released in December. I have a wip and a primed finished shot, as well as one with painting commenced but not completed. Ref my wip thread

Here's a WIP shot I took this morning before I did more work on it. I've nearly finished the converting now and should have finished or near finished pics up around the same time tomorrow (hopefully).

Does Liquid Green Stuff count as paint? Can I put liquid green stuff on a model before taking a final picture or is this not allowed?

I do not advise using liquid greenstuff as a paint. Why would you want to coat a perfectly good model in a thick filler that will hide all the details?

I'm not using it as paint, just as gapfilling, I was wondering whether it counted as paint in this challenge due to the label on it.

And here are some almost finished pics, I'll see if I can get better pics today as they're now finished:

Some extra pics will be in my WIP, again not completely finished at this point but almost.

if you wanna sculpt the exact armour of the mercenary goblins go look at the troll chieftain, its the same armour version, just like azog...

Well thanks, I didn't remember exactly what armour the Goblin Mercenaries were wearing so I just went for something simple I knew I could easily replicate, I went for something like a kind of tortoise shell, which given thier small size and humpbacked bodies makes it look like they deliberately tried to mimic the turtle in the design. Not entirely screen accurate but it gets the point across. If I ever want to do some more Goblin Mercs, I will follow your advice.

And here are my finished pics for the challenge:

First, the Half Troll/Bolg's Guard:
Image

Then the Goblin Mercenaries:
Image

Then the Gundabad Trolls from the front:

And from the back:
Image

I believe only 4 pics are allowed, but there will be a few more in WIP shortly plus size comparison between the new Bolg and the first Azog. The size difference is highly noticeable.

Thanks for the invite to join the challenge ukfreddybear.
I've not entered one of these challenges before, since I'm already on my way to full completion, should I use the images in the WIP thread to show my earliest progress as proof?

I'm letting the proof pics slide a bit for this one as technically the film wasnt released until after the challenge started. So there shouldn't be any cheating this time around.
