It's their new "formula" is what I was told. They're supposedly changing the resin type/mixture whatever it technically is lol

Do you have a comparison image to the old one, I don't see the difference?

Yep I don't see the difference, only a veteran like you could have spotted this out :) I think JamesR is on the money, Finecast has improved from what I've heard and a new resin formula sounds likely.

No wonder some of you have be happy with fine cast recently. This is not even the same color.

Well this is the first one I have seen. This is not even close to the old formula. I will have a better idea of what I think when I find out more.

I have two third hand rumors.
1. Fine cast stopped/ended production September 2013. So all fine cast models were made before that date.
2. The new formula was a temporary stop gap.
I do not rate this source as reliable.

My info is from speaking to my local GW manager Brett, probably the only GW employee I've ever had any respect for lol.

I have read several rumours regarding FW taking over Finecast production, so I wonder if they're using their resin in the Finecast Moulds? I certainly hope so, as their resin has been great every time I've had some. I imagine if so then this wouldn't effect us unless we see new releases, or the old stock of Finecast stuff is old out, which could well be a while for our stuff.

I saw that too. I am afraid that a much more reliable source claims that it is not true. I agree we won't see anything different for a while.

This is good news. I quite like my Forgeworld Space Marines. I may finally buy Finecast if it is the same as Forgeword, though I'm still disgruntled over the price.

Its strange that GW hasn't announced this and made a big deal out of it, to placate angry customers and reclaim some goodwill. You'd think that a change from a poor quality and unpopular material to a more durable and more popular meterial would be something to blow your own trumpet over.

But then again this is GW, and they never admit a mistake.

Hmmm, an interesting spot, OMW. I may have to pick up some new DoS minis and see for myself ;)

Would indeed expect that the main reason for not telling us of any improvement, is that it involves admitting (wheter or not explicitly) that there was - quite some! - room for improvement.
Then again, I'd equally much expect them to come up with a statement saying how this is 'even better'. Unless they realise that saying it is better than finecast, isn't much of a quality certification anyway.

Glad to hear they may actually be fixing the stuff. Thanks for the update Oldman Willow.

Whatever that is it looks a hell of a lot better than the finecast mini my girlfriend bought a while back. This actually looks like it's cast up properly, and I don't think I even see any air bubbles..? The colour looks very different, too, although I realise that it's a photo and white balance etc has to be taken into account.

I'd buy that mini for my Chaos warband, though, and I never, ever buy finecast if I can avoid it.

No air bubbles or defects of any kind. It is gray.

Well, I finally got some of my models I ordered. Fine cast spiders are flawless (spindly legs and all). I am worried about the Laketown Bowmen as one of the arrows is very very thin finecast, but there are no bubbles. All the mirkwood elf finecast looks awesome as well. I can't find any defects. Some laketown spears are bent, but metal would do the same in a clam pack. I think they finally got the system down pat.
We were right to be mad customers when they switched materials, hiked prices and delivered less quality.
GW was of course right to keep at it and throw up smoke screens as they re-dialed how they make molds and learned what common problems and fixes they were making as they switched over.
Now I think GW knows just how they need to make the molds to get good casts, and they know what to look for to ensure quality. I think Finecast is very safe now. I expect there will still be people who check every box before purchase, but just remember the fine line between doing it because you want a good model (which means you can do a little work removing flash or cleaning like with metals of any brand) and the line of making GW open every box just so mess with them and cost them money.

YESSS!
I had one or two forgeworld marines, and they were excellent.
This is an incredible development.
