Wow. Incredible work. This is an amazing board, and well deserving of the first place finish, as well as the people's choice award! Well done indeed!

@theavenger001: thanks muchly!

Just a brief update and a couple of behind the scene pics from today's photo shoot for the scenario 10, the Watcher in the water, of our campaign. The batrep can now be read over at the campaign thread.

Here's the Finecast Watcher preparing for the shoot - it's getting some of its tentacles cut off, as well as some blood make-up for its final scene.

Image

Here's a pic of the lighting arrangement. I used a different camera last time, and the resulting dusk / night images were rather purplish. I'm now back to my usual camera, so hopefully the night photos have a more pleasing hue. I also added an extra blue spotlight to illuminate figures from the side - it can be seen attached to the "helping hand" on the shoreline.

Image

Gandalf's staff illumination was another small lightbulb, with the last five cm of the wires painted brown to match the color of the staff. The rest of the wires were hidden behind Gandalf, under rocks and under the bases of other models as they wound their way through the Hollin gate. The light was bright enough to hide the fact that the lamp was usually either behind the head of the staff or on the side. In the final photos I hope that the lamp gives a good enough illusion of the staff actually producing the light.

Your usual camera makes this look much better. Nice touch with the make up for the watcher.

I was looking over this thread a lot the last few days. I am working on my Cirith Ungol stuff and was looking at something extensive to get inspired.

it is working.

It's been a while since my last update - I took a breather lasting through March after the hectic January-February and the workload that was Amon Hen. But I'm slowly ramping up my pace, and here's an update on what's been going on recently with Helm's Deep.

I'm still attempting to build a section ready by mid-June for the diorama challenge, namely the 80x90 board having the majority of the Deeping Wall, the Deeping Stream, a bit of the stairs leading to Hornburg side, as well as the start of the carved staircase heading to the back courtyard behind the tower:

Image

I started with a foamcore skeleton for the wall sections, with several vertical supports near the culvert:

Image

I'm building the shorter section of the Deeping Wall at the same time; here the 5mm foamcore skeleton is waiting for a cereal box cardboard covering:

Image

The longer section fully covered with cardboard:

Image

The cardboard will, in turn, be covered with 3mm Depron, to which I will engrave the block structure:

Image

The lower part of the Deeping Wall is built of heavier, larger blocks. In general, the blocks are quite varying in size:

Image

Image

Liberal amounts of white glue is used to secure the engraved Depron sheets in place on top of the cardboard backing:

Image

Image

Once the glue is fully dried, individual stones are cut and re-glued either a bit raised or sunken, to give a slightly irregular look. The stones will eventually get cracks and other blemishes before painting.

Image

The crenellations are also not of equal length; a template is drawn with individual pieces numbered:

Image

...and cut from 3cm blue foam with a hot wire cutter. At the same time I also cut the long stairs to the back courtyard from 5cm foam:

Image

The crenellations are beveled, again with the help of the wire cutter:

Image

Tile / block seams are carved into crenellations with black ball-point pen, just as in the Depron sheets. Note the block of blue foam raising the height of the tower.

Image

The Deeping Wall top is cut from 6mm Depron. A tile pattern is again embossed with a black ball-point pen.

Image

I've yet to complete the wall top tile pattern, but once that is done, I can glue the tops in place, followed by the blue foam block for the tower. Thin sheets of Depron will then be embossed and glued to complete the tower walls, followed by crenellations and short stairs for the tower. Stay tuned...

Looking great and a true inspiration. Do you think you will finish it in time for the diorama challenge ?

Thanks for the comments!
@Gandlaf: I'm pretty confident I'll get the terrain done, so it's a matter of how many Uruks and Rohan warriors I can paint. Definitely not enough to fill the entire board, but I will focus around the culvert section - I have a cunning plan for that area... something that I haven't seen anyone do before...

And if it seems that I will not meet the deadline, well, no worries - I try not to stress with the challenge nearly as much as I did with the Amon Hen & the model show deadline. That was murder... whatever I manage to build is still work done towards the completion of the Helm's Deep board, as well as the Isengard and Rohan forces.

@Paboook - thanks!

@Scott, I added self-fashioned wings to the Thomarillion Gryphons (http://www.thomarillion.de/index.php?seite=katalog&modell=greif&pos=1&sprache=gb_). As explained earlier, the pedestals under the Gryphons have a scratch-built ornament trim on top of a block of blue foam.

Ah ha! Many thanks mate :-)

Oh, I tried to find that large fallen statue head on its side too...but again it eluded me. I did find one called the 'Kings head' , but it had a heavier looking crown and beard - did you get this one and trim it down?

Thanks again.

...BTW, I showed my wife your pics of your stashed boxes of models still to paint... she now realises I am not the only one! ;-)

That half-buried head was a Thomarillion item, too - no modifications needed, just paint, as it was a very good representation of the statue as seen in the film. Alas, that model hasn't been available for quite some time, I'm afraid.

Regarding the unpainted stash... I made a rough calculation that I probably have a bit over 3,000 figures still to go before this campaign is done... after the diorama challenge is done, I'll see how quickly I can paint 500 Isengard figures + 300 Rohan - that should give me a rough idea about how overtly optimistic my campaign schedules really are...
