Very much doubt this stuff will be worth the pricetag on the cover, but would be glad to be proven wrong. Seems more like an easy way to get more money, changing 12 times whateverthepricewas to 12 times that same price + 52 times another couple of quid. Supposed WD relaunch quite recently wasn't a change for the better either, or much of a change at all. Would love to see house rules, unusual conversions, awesome scenery and other good stuff return. Not even mentioning the Hobbit on the cover isn't a good start though - although at least they're not giving any false hope...

I miss the days of White Dwarf with 3 distinct sections: WHFB, 40K, then LoTR, with Specialist articles scattered through the mag. Got at least 20 pages for LoTR each week which was great. Loads of terrain articles for everything, sometimes more than 1 Battle Report a month, custom forces, Golden Daemon Showcases, painting guides, House rules and new Scenarios, as well as interviews which the rule makers. Was pretty cool.

Sadly I stopped my subscription about the time the Morannon Orc plastic set came out because it had simply become a catalogue by then.

I flipped through January's WD and was very disappointed to see that it contained nothing for The Hobbit aside from the new minis releases. The new mags don't even have "The Hobbit" on the covers or anything. Slightly surprising, but that's what happens when you price yourselves out of the market I suppose. In any event, GW are now potentially making $30 a month where before they were getting $10. No wonder they don't put hobby stuff up on the site anymore, they figure we'll buy it for 5 bucks a week!

Read the GW info on the new magazine, they only cover 40K and WHFB.

The end is nigh !!!!

They have only said that Warhammer Visions will be only WHFB and 40k.
I'm hoping that maybe one of the weekly ones per month will be a Hobbit (or majority Hobbit) edition!

Whilst it's certainly not great news I don't think it particularly means much. After all, WD has had 'The Hobbit' written on the cover for the last 14 issues and, after the first December 2012 release issue, hasn't had a single article about SBG. Throughout the second half of last year there weren't even any releases so putting it on the front was essentially false advertising. I think this is just a more honest approach, Fantasy and 40K are their big properties and SBG just isn't at the same level as them, it's essentially something like Forgeworld or the Black Library, another set of releases each month but not the main content of the magazine. I don't think we'll see any great change in the Hobbit coverage in the new magazines; a few releases each month for the first half of the year and then nothing until (hopefully) a new sourcebook in December. It's a shame but I've long since reconciled myself with the fact that WD isn't supporting SBG, I'm just glad they got the rights to the movies so we got the new rulebook and this fantastic range of models and new army lists that have really shaken up the meta of the game.

It really is a shame; I remember so many amazing and inspiring articles coming out during the heyday...

True, but is this cause or effect? A system that gets very little magazine space, no advertising hardly, and very low interest in most of their stores, and from staff, (I swear I am better acquainted with the range then some of their own store staff), so it will suffer. Sad because at the time of the LotR trilogy the game was a very big property, and gained a lot of new customers.

So, to make matters even worse, it looks as if the new monthly mag will be A5 format. Had a feeling that may be the case, looking at the price and page count, but still a disappointment.
They must have forgotten to mention that page size was halved when they were so busy going on about increasing the number of pages. An A5 catalogue with pretty pics also doesn't seem very functional actually. Not that it matters much, with the likely low amount of Middle-earth content...

Oh absolutely, I'm not saying they're blameless at all, I think it's a cycle, sales fell off inevitably as the memory of the movies faded, GW gave the system less support, thanks to that sales fell off more, they supported it less, sales fall off more etc. What I meant was that as they are clearly not giving SBG as much support as their big 2, at least they're no longer claiming that they are by giving it equal billing on the cover. I actually found that quite misleading last year.

Really? Urgh, that's annoying, hadn't heard that. Supposedly it's going up to £7.50 too, that would well and truly price me out of the market. I haven't thought much of WD for some years now but it was still thick enough and reasonably priced enough to warrant picking up an issue or two every now and again, however little real content there was. If it really is £7.50 for a 100 page version of the current WD then that's a big no from me. I'm quite intrigued by the weekly though, the fact that they're putting rules in it again is a nice touch and if there's other similar gaming content then I could be swayed. I'll certainly be popping down to GW on Saturday to give them both a flick through before making up my mind though.

Well, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cqFbTa5qOI
Good news: there are some Hobbit.. pictures in there. Can't call it content though. Can't call anything in there proper content in fact, from what I saw. It looks absolutely terrible.

Absolutely amazing. I literally have no idea who that Warhammer Visions thing is aimed at. Ah well, that works for me, I use to have a little debate each month about whether or not WD was worth picking up and Visions is, IMO, clearly not. The saddest thing is that it seems to be the final end of the Battle Reports, probably the single most enjoyable regular I've ever read in any magazine ever.

White Dwarf weekly looks more promising though, on the week's where there's Hobbit stuff released I could probably spare the £2.40 for a glossy rag to flick through, particularly as it seems to include rules, scenarios etc. Also means I'm not stumping up cash for 40K content I don't want (I don't play fantasy anymore but it still interests me to read through).

Utterly baffling decision by GW. Thanks for the link Coenus.

I find it strange that in the days of the internet and unlimited free photos and information, GW is trying to flog a magazine of pictures to people.

What are the team smoking? This might have been a valid tactic in the 80s and 90s but now we have the internet it's pretty much pointless.

Just watched the video, amazed WD Monthly is just a Photo Mag with small amount of text in 3 different languages!

Also notice when the video shows Lake Town minis the Lake Town scenery is now gone replaced by the Ruins set

The weekly mag may be of more interest only on release weeks, i hope fellow members who go into GW stores on a regular basis can comment on whether its worth buying that week.

The Glorified Catalogue moniker has never been more appropriate than now.
