Nah they look great.

Find it weird the horses don't have armour on their heads though but that's the sculpt obviously.

I think the horses look great. As you noted the focal point of the model will be the rider anyway, but I still think these are good.

Thanks for the comments guys. I know I can be hard on myself but that's just the way I see my models.

jmh_stirling, the bases are mainly GW Static Grass. The little shrubs are made from Woodland Scenics Clump Foliage and the flowers are just painted on dots of bright paint. I make the long grass from cheap paintbrushes, I just cut the fibres off from the brush and cut them roughly to the height I want and super glue them to the base.

I've almost finished my first Knight of Rivendell, but I've got a couple of issues with it. Firstly I really don't like the cape, and by that I mean I don't like the way I've painted it (copied from the DoS sourcebook). I can't seem to get the same effect they do and I think the way I've done it just looks awful.
Secondly, I always seem to have a problem with the paint on the edges of the model getting chipped or worn off really easily just whilst I'm holding the model to paint it. I really want these models to look great and I know that I have the ability to do so, I just can't seem to get it right with these models. Maybe it's because I have to figure out how to paint them myself, I haven't found a single tutorial for them anywhere.

Anyway, here's a picture of the terrible cloak, complete with chips. I'm probably going to completely repaint it so if anyone has any advice that would be great.

It looks all very high quality but I think I'd personally go with a different stade of grey. As you said it looks weird and cartoony. Maybe try a go for a darker grey and highlight the edges more and have it an overall darker colour. Painting big flat surfaces are hard though.

You could also try a semi-metallic grey. GW used it for the first age High Elves back in 2001 when the first film came out so maybe try and repaint.

Mounting the feet of the models on blu tac and holding on to that helps often with the "touching" issue,

Any pictures of the other side of the model?

hey Dom,

I couldn't help but reminisce about the times when I became frustrated with my work, especially when it came to blending. Look at my wip, my frustration was terrible, lol.

I would really like to help by giving some advice to you, but I was actually thinking that I should make an article explaining how I blend colors, especially for clothing.

What do you think? This question goes out to the other one-ringers as well. Would you guys like to see a blending tutorial?

I just now came across your new thread? Where the heck have I been, as I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't heard from you in a long while. The horses are looking incredible Dom! The mane on the brown horse is just absolutely sick! Love it. I have been working on horses too as of late. I am becoming a big fan of ink washes on them. I use AP strong tone for lighter brown horses and dark tone for darker brown horses. I am to chicken to try a grey horse yet. I run the inks into the recessed parts of the muscle before highlighting.

Really looking great man! You'll get the cloaks down in no time, already making great progress!

The second cloak is a LOT better Dom. It employs a sort of tromp l'oil effect, where you're simulating a few bends and folds which are not actually there, in order to break up the otherwise slightly too flat and plain surface. A really difficult thing to paint well.

There is no doubt Dom's painting is good and he has a very smooth way of applying his paint that provides a great finish. However his blending needs work and I believe that is where Feanor is coming from, it is about taking Dom to his next level.
He can clearly be an excellent painter and now needs that help to progress further, which I am more than sure he will.

Some of you guys are a tad harsh on your own abilities - they are all very nicely painted!
The only suggestion I can make is that the outermost edges of anything can be left to last (as they are the most accessible) or can be touched up if necessary but make sure you have the correct colours/ratios of mixtures to apply.
I am waiting for Rivendell Knights to arrive and I only realised when seeing these that they are really only designed for the cloaks on, as the rump and hind quarters have been sculpted to accomodate the flapping cloaks.
