Tricky...

~Gandalf on his cart [so full of character]
~Dain [can't think of much to improve this model of a great Dwarvish king: carrying a nice axe, well armoured, defiant and very hairy!]
~Glorfindel mounted [dynamic, flowing robes, decorated horse - pretty much the perfect Elf]
~Dúnedain (kneeling, hooded) [odd one out here, but just.. how he should be]
~Guards of the Fountain Court [great design, ceremonial yet practical]
~Worm [just look at it.. excellent figure]
~Witch-king mounted (hooded) [simple, but a true embodyment of evil and fear)
~Éowyn (no armour) [the shieldmaiden of Rohan, fierce even while wearing a simple dress]
~Radagast (original) [very druid-like, a true wizard of nature.. and much more serious than that poor portrayal in the movie]
~Sauron [an even scarier manifestation of evil], Elessar [as GotFC], Galadriel [either LotR version, prefer the pose of the 'blue version' though the details and face are better on the original one], Erkenbrand, Durburz [excellent goblin leader, as I imagined (and would have preferred) Azog to be], Ringwraith on foot (sword vertical, two-handed) [as Witch-king] |<| don't make me choose between all of these! ||

Not that I have painted them all, and I'm not sure I can rank them, but the ones I like most are:

Galadriel and Mirror
Fountain Guard
Guards of the Galadhrim Court
Mahud King on camel
Eagles (plastic kit)
Corsairs (all of them)
Ranger of the North (original, with helmet)
Gorbag
Balin
Ugluk

Some of them might not be the most awesome sculpts, I just had fun painting them...like Ugluk and the head :)

So far no one model is dominating everbody's lists. Everyone here has different preferences.

I think that's a good sign of the general high quality of the range. Sure, there's a few duffers and newer stuff tends towards finer detail, but much of the range is of such sheer quality it's damn tricky to pick any one best model. :-D

Actually one of my favourite models from this new release is Legolas (hobbit version of course) simply because one look at his face can make me laugh every time!

For me, the top 10 would have to be (In no particular order)

Boromir - Fellowship. Classic pose with the horn and a great likeness of Sean Bean as well.
Gandalf - Fellowship. Whenever I'm reading the books, this model reflects his description perfectly
Guard of the Fountain Court. Love these guys. Their armour is beautiful, but also practical
Theoden - Helm's Deep on foot. From the detail of the armour to his noble and defiant pose, this model is full of character and is just begging to be painted
Witch King - Horse, Rearing pose. Easy to paint, yet intimidating to go up against on the battlefield
Ranger of Gondor/Arnor - Kneeling and reloading. I love this sneaky little so-and-so :)
Plastic Gondor troops (Warriors + Knights). I just love the varied poses and the ability to convert them with ease. From just these two sets, I can create Warriors, Knights, Osgiliath Veterans, Warriors of Arnor, Mounted Citadel Guard with longbows, and with simple weapon swaps there can be so much variety from one unit to another.
The Tainted on horse - Perfect model to match the description of ringwraiths in the books.
Boromir, Captain of the White Tower - on foot with shield. I never leave home without him. Simple to paint, simple to use. :)

Wormtongue
Metal Galadhrim
Eowyn in robes
Eomer, Marshal of the Pelennor
Plastic Uruk holding his shield and sword in the air
Galadriel (lady)
Boromir, Captain of the White Tower
High Elf Cavalry
Gimli on dead Uruk
Vault Wardens
Unnamed Nazgul on foot.

I'd like to nominate two more:

from the Mirkwood Rangers - the masked, hooded one and the crouching one.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... od2330081a

That's the second from right on the bottom row, and the top right. My god, I've just finished painting them and I'm floored.

Elendil
The Numenorian archer standing straight
The high elf with spear and shield, holding his spear straight up, personifies their faction.
The Necromancer
Isildur on horse (wish I had him)
The Knight of Umbar
Glonfindal in armour (I'm sorry, unarmoured one looks like bonnie Tyler)
Guard of the fountain court
Rohan royal guard on foot
Guard of the Galadhim court
The first three were the ones that got me into the lotr game I must say.

I really like the Barrels out of Bond set. Do you think you could double them up to represent dwarves stuffed in a bag during the Trolls scenario?

Regarding the list, hmmm I'll have to think about that longer.
