Another week (or so) has passed and another command unit has been completed so I'm now on to standard units which will hopefully paint up a bit quicker (I had to re-paint the flame on the standard bearer as I wasn't happy with how it looked the first time round which ate up a chunk of time).

Comments and criticism welcome.

No criticism needed, these are excellent. I like the way you've done the flame.

Yes, I second the compliments on the flame - the extra time was well worth it, I think.

They're lovely. Utterly lovely.

One thing that impresses me across your minis is the lovely bases. Despite my best efforts with gravel and sand and paint, I utterly fail to accomplish anything as neat and real looking as yours. They're avoiding the temptation to go overboard with detail, which I see a lot of online, which is brilliant because it makes the base fade away and the mini itself pop out into reality.

Substantially jealous. :D

Nice one! I think you probably have the most painted Fallen Dwarves in the world right now haha.

The best thing about all your miniatures is the visual cohesion across the entire collection.

I use a mix or course and fine sand (about 25/75 mix) which I have pre-mixed in a tub. To do any of the bases I literally paint PVA glue onto them making sure there's enough down to facilitate the sand and then using an old spoon poor sand all over the base until its as deep as it can be. Leave this overnight and then shake off, a little clean up is generally needed around the edges but otherwise jobs a good 'un.
To paint any bases I always go for three of four layers. In this case you have a black undercoat, then a slightly watered down charred brown painted on liberally, then (once dry) a heavy drybrush or snakebite leather which is then followed by a very light drybrush of bleached bone.

And the collection is only going to grow ;)
Actually when I finished my Easterlings and Black Numenoreans I was a bit downhearted as I wasn't likely to get any other forces for LOTR and hoped that the Hobiit films would yield some new miniatures. However, alas, nothing has really grabbed me so far but then I found the Fallen Dwarves (through Beasts of War I think) and they ticked all the boxes for me so I proceeded to pick up a good sized force. Then the usual thing happened, something new and shiny arrived which took my attention away so they remained base coated in a 'to do' box until you posted up the new WIP pictures. At this point I vowed to have them done before the next wave was released and here we are!
I've already got a shopping list for the new miniatures (one of each hero, 16 Immortals, 3 Golems, one Cyclops and then some of the rhino type creatures - hoping you'll do both the palanquin for the sorcerer and giant crossbow as I'd have one of the sorcerer and maybe up to 3 crossbows ). I also suspect that I pick up more of the rhinos if the Red Orcs make an appearance, I'd vowed no Orcs however I think I'll make an exception for these (hope to see troops as well).

Anyway that's enough of my mad ramblings and I apologise for the wall of text, all I'll say now is that if you haven't checked out the Miniatures of North blog it's well worth a quick peek:

I've just finished the first 'basic' unit tonight and took some snaps, this means I'm working on the last of the infantry now and hope to start the crossbows at some stage next week.

I like them - they are quite sinister looking, especially the helms. Something about them reminds me of the Witchking of Angmar, but he was buried in a tomb, sealed with unbreakable spells.....

I'm not one for dwarves but the Grimhammers have something about them that appeals.
That aside, you have done these exceptionally well that truly sets them up as an impressive set of minis.

I've just completed the last of the standard Fallen Dwarves so here are the pictures:

Now on to the first unit of crossbows, though they may take a little while due to festivities this week.

Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone :)
