Hi,

Hi i am new to the game would like to know few things.


Weapons on the miniature for example archers holding bow,

does it means that only that unit can fire arrows?

As in Galadriel's warriors some are armed with blades so those can
be used as archers?

Sorry the question sounded a little dumb but new to this game.

Usually people play with a What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) ruling. It is easier to see what your opponent is fielding if the wargear they're equipped with matches the actual model. Having said that, I've also played games where I've said to my opponent that all my Rohan royal guards have throwing spears (even though some models had swords). Because they all have them, there is no confusion.

The archers can certainly fight hand to hand if charged, since every model is assumed to have a hand weapon (sword, dagger, etc). However, some equipment is specialized (bows, spears, 2H weapons, etc), as ukfreddybear said we rely on what the model looks like to determine what they have. So unless your elf blade warriors are also modelled with bows (something you'd have to do yourself) they can't shoot.

When you're building your army you have to buy specific equipment for each of your troops, and then use models that represent that equipment. There is a bit of wiggle room: if you wanted to say that all your non-bow wood elves have throwing daggers, you don't have to model that so long as your opponent is informed and agrees.

So only archers we can say has 2 weapons where else the rest will be what they are holding right?

So normally an archer's hand to hand combat is just same as a model that is armed with a sword is it that is how you guy play it?

Not always. Some models, like a berserker, come modelled only with a 2-handed weapon, but they don't have to use it. Since every model has a hand weapon, they might not want to use their 2H weapon in a particular fight because it puts them at a disadvantage to win.

It's like this: every model has a hand weapon. After that, every model has the equipment they are shown holding.

Yes, those are the rules. Personally I'd have liked archers to have to pay for normal combat capability, but this way is simpler.

The other thing that's worth adding is that if you can't see the hand weapon a model carries it is assumed to be a knife/dagger and so the model cannot use special strikes.

This was in a recent FAQ and is a nice ruling as it means that an archer is in fact at a slight combat disadvantage compared to a model carrying a sword or an axe.

Special strikes are really useful, getting into the habbit of using them takes a little effort though.

Also i think wont be opening a new topic on this hopefully its ok.

Is it worth to get the old source books like Battle of Pellennor Fields, Shadow and Flame? Or i should get the new sourcebook instead?

The old sourcebooks are good for scenarios and stuff, a good buy if you have the spare cash and can find them cheap. I would recommend getting the new sourcebooks before anything else, that way you'll have all the up-to-date rules.

I like 'em, it took us a few games to get into the habit of remembering them but once we got going I think it's a nice idea. They're clearly not perfectly implemented due to the balance issues but I like the idea that all these warriors now fight with different styles. There are obviously some issues such as Moria goblins essentially getting to re-roll 1s to wound all he time but that actually encourages you to take sword armed goblins whereas before you generally just saw spear armed goblins behind a D6 front line.

The axes also offer up some interesting tactical dilemmas concerning risk and reward. I do find that playing against dwarves or Khand is where the weapon rules tend to bog the game down a little as for so many combats (with Khazads etc.) the player has to decide A) am I fighting 2-handed B) am I special striking. It definitely can slow things down but overall I still think they're a nice addition.

I really like the tactical options presented when you start outnumbering your opponent - your rohan warrior with an axe will special strike whilst your rohan warrior with sword will feint against the moria goblin. The guy with axe uses his fight value to win and then the piercing strike and feinting re-rolls all, but ensure the kill. It's good fun.

I noticed there are these journey books. Inside there are scenarios.

Is it possible to own these journey books and play without those source books?

The journey books are packed with scenarios based around the chronology of their corresponding movie. They are a good pick up if its just scenarios you want. I don't think there are any stats or profiles included, but there are tips on scenery building.

Hmm it is possible that i just played out the scenario without source book?
Just want to get a feel of the game first.

The scenarios will include lists of what models to use. It will also include in the Journeybook / Sourcebook some profiles, but usually just anything new introduced in that book (or perhaps changed). But you will often find that the Journeybook / Sourcebook does not include ALL recommended profiles so you may still need one of the other books if you're missing things.
