Silly question. One Uruk with shield being supported by two uruks with pikes. The Uruk with shield losses the fight...wouldn't he be trapped by his two mates supporting him with pikes?

Not a silly question at all - I did not know this. It seems a bit stupid to me to be honest - why would anyone bother taking pikes then really - too much risk for not enough reward.
Also, the mini hobbit rulebook says the model must back directly away from the enemy. In the past I have always played side to side, but if it says directly away how can you say that it can be side to side? The words "Directly AWAY" does not mean "directly alongsinde" to me so it seems like the same logic would apply here.

Even if you're strict about "directly away", the model making way for the model in combat can move in any direction. Pikes are fine, you just need to be a tad more careful, and avoid pike blocks that are three or more wide.
