Well I had a light bulb moment and found my leaded lights. I was in the kitchen and found a tea strainer !!! If only I had thought...
That does only give me the diamond design so I will have to work on a square design as well. Maybe even try for something intricate, but if nothing else works then a few cut up tea strainers will suit me down to the ground.

Another progress shot. I have gone through a few learning curves with this piece. firstly learning how to cut true holes in balsa, down to working the brickwork a bit better. The tubing I got hold of seems to work great for the window frames, so all in all this is done barring the leaded lights.
I have the lead parts ready, but I'm now thinking of mounting them on some clear Perspex or similar. The back of this will be black, but I'm thinking the Perspex will help with the glass look.
For the main part, the top section and arched section will be covered on grasses

Below is what I have found for the leaded widows. We had this fine colllander in our drawer that is past it's sell by date. Having looked at it closely it has various patterns from a square to a triangle, so I'm intending to cut this up and fix it to the front of some perspex.

I did look at fine mesh but could never see anything I was completely happy with. I'm hoping this will fit the bill.
I've ordered some clear printing sheet which I will fix to a piece of painted black card. The mesh will get a touch of paint to darken it slightly, then it will be fixed to the front of the clear sheet and attached to the inside of each window hole.
I have made three more single windows, making 8 windows and a door so far. My next one will be the kitchen window and then the back door. Once I have them I will test everything out for size on the diorama and see if I can push to the 13 windows. I would like to make another 3 window piece like the parlour window but that is very much dependant on room.

Looking great - better and better all the time.
What terrifies me about these more intricate projects is the awful possibility of something going horribly wrong just as you are trying to finish it off. That is a very innovative approach with the old colander - my only concern would be that the mesh is curved and you will be flattening it out so I would worry that it might be under some pressure to resume the original curved shape. I could be madly tilting at windmills a bit but just something I thought it wise to mention in advance.

Certainly worth considering and something I hadn't though of. My get out of jail card will be the fact the windows are small, only 7mm to cover with the large holes. The parlour window will be something else to consider but I have enough flatter areas to use, so hopefully it won't prove as issue.
Furthermore the leaded piece I produce is to be glued to the back of the unit, so that should also create the pressure to hold it in place.

How can Bag End be too big ?

If you can make it out I have 2 doors and 9 windows and 2 of them won't fit on. The real Bag End has 13 windows !!!
Decisions decisions.
I think I'm going to make a bigger base to fit in the 2 windows already made.
But should I go huge and make another 4 windows ?
My thoughts are not, as this will make it way too big. I need to consider the banking that will go between some windows.
Can I have your thoughts please. Have I made the windows too big ? I could narrow them down slightly, perhaps.
I'm a bit stuck it seems...

Let me start by saying what you have done looks wounderful 8)
Could you add a ruler to future photos.
:idea:
Make a separate base for Bags End's structure. Then attach the window sections to the edge of the base. This will help you maintain the curve/shape and help you decide how much to trim. Then make the ground work base to fit the structure base. This should help keep model size creep in check.
I like to make full size paper base mock ups. It helps me build models that will fit in boxes or on the display shelf.

Thanks Charlie. Unfortunately I've just seen this as the idea of a seperate piece for Bag End would have worked well for me. However, onwards and upwards. The board in the picture is 400mm wide and I envisage needing another 100mm to be safe.
I'm currently cutting up a 50mm thick piece of styrofoam to create the Bag End and gardens. It will slope down to the road, which in turn will slope down to the base.
So it will be fairly tall !!!
My foam cutting leaves a lot to be desired to say the least, but one thing with this stuff is you can easily piece back together if need be. Also it will get a coating of polyfilla or similar so I can smooth everything out and create level areas where needed. For example the path leading from front to the back door.
Anyway, I will get a very rough shape and get the window position sorted. I've still to put the leaded windows in.
I will get a new wooden base sorted this weekend then hopefully segments will be fitted in place in the next week.
That's the initial plan and once I'm happy with that then it will be sorting the roof, landspill between windows, then the path, steps and slope down. Then the gate, fence, hedges, lawn, kitchen garden, plants, flowers, road, pond, stone wall...oh yes and a whacking great oak tree. So all in all, not too much.
