Just a little scene I'm working on at the minute. The finished thing will have water effects added and a Fimir swiping a hammer across the orc's face and splashing in the water.

Fimir to come next and then the water and the splashes.

Thanks for looking!

Great so far! I take it that the Fimir is a Forgeworld model?

Your eye for knowing where highlights should be is second to none my friend. I hate you.

Just kidding this has the makings of a masterpiece. Can't wait to see it finished.

I remember the profiles in Warhammer II being some what weak, the rhumour was that the miniatures had been sculpted too large. I used to own a War Lord and A Hag Witch, the range never really took off with the originals, no doubt in part due to their mannable of reproduction being somewhat unpalatable to a younger audience.

I hope that Forgeworld have developed rules taking into account their great size etc.

Thanks DMS. I will do my best.

Bilbo, yeah the fimir's reproductive habits are a bit strong for a kids market. Definitely had something to do with them being written out of warhammer lore.

I remember reading it as an eleven year old thinking, this is a bit grim! Or shall I say Grimm?

Thanks Gandalf.
Well, I ordered the Fimir from Forge World and when they arrived I sent them straight back as they were the worst casts I have ever seen (and I bought finecast the week it came out :P ) so I made the scene about two Empire soldiers instead.
This is the stage it's at and it's still very much a work in progress.
There needs to be another couple of layers of clear water added then water splashes and ripples around the figures and I will be further highlighting the cloak of the veteran on the arm and lapels and adding slight highlights to his face.
I slightly converted the bow arm to be angled down (intimating he has just taken the shot) and added a bow string.

Thanks for looking.

It just gets better.
I've a water question as I'm planning on a pond for a diorama I'm building. Have you painted the base black and dark to light brown at the edges. And then added clear water ?
Or have you tinted the water ?

I painted the base a really dark green in the centre and lighter nearer the edges (as in the pictures near the top) but then I added tinted water in gradients too.
First two layers of water were tinted strongly with brown ink, next two layers with less brown ink (looked quite sepia) and the last two layers (not shown here yet) were pure, clear Realistic Water but with dried oregano added sparingly and selectively for a detritus effect.
Water Effects were added after the last layer of Realistic Water(also not shown here obviously) to simulate ripples and splashes and to just generally liven up the static surface.
I'll upload when it's all dry as the water effects takes ages to dry clear.

Genuinely stunning!

I think the only flaw is that it's flawless... to me it looks a bit too perfect... perhaps some more weathering and roughness on the clothes would help?

Utterly fantastic painting though
You should enter it into the GD awards!

Please post a photo of the effect before it drys. I think it will be helpful for people who have not used the water effects.
Very well done 8)

That's excellent thank you. The colour of your water is something like what I was after so this is virtually an instruction guide. Thanks again I will look forward to the updated photos.
I presume you have to let each layer cure before adding the next, so in reality you are adding water for about a week with drying time inbetween.

Yes Gandalf, allow each layer to cure before applying the next. It can take 3 hours to a day for a layer to dry depending on how thick the layer was and the humidity.
Have a fan in the room and keep it out of sunlight as heat makes it stay soft.
I poured a blob on and painted it into recesses using a very old brush so the layer was ultra thin. Patience is required :P

Ok so here's the scene with the water effects added which are still not dry.
Image
Image

You'll notice it's still very cloudy in places and it makes the water look choppy (and I added a fresh blob yesterday on the orc's foot in the water) so maybe it will take another week for 100% crystal clear but this gives you a general idea how it's going to look. Seriously, this stuff takes ages to dry but every day it's getting a little bit clearer so it's something to look forward to.
I am over the moon with how the ripples and splash have turned out. It's much better than I imagined it would look which is always nice.
I also added sharper highlights onto the veteran's coat. I don't think you can really tell in the picture but it just finished it off nicely.
I think I'm going to add an overhanging tree at the back just to add a bit of atmosphere and break up the scene a bit. Should I go green or go autumn? I think a deep orange
would tie the yellow of the soldiers and the rust and belt of the orc together nicely. What do you think?

Is that a line of water hanging from his raised foot ? It certainly seems it and looks great for what I can see. The whole scene is great and put together wonderfully.
I do agree with the tree as it will just give it that edge. As for the colour I'm looking at the moss you already have, it looks very late summer / early autumn so I think you can get away with some autumn orange or gold.

Thanks Gandalf. Here's a better shot of the water splash on the foot.
I think autumn would work really well too.

Those water effects are stunning and there's no wonder your delighted. I bet you had to stop yourself going overboard ( no pun intended )
Looking again at the colours I think some gold leaf will fit the yellow and red leaf for the rust.
The pond I'm planning for my bag end may have a hobbit dragging a pig out of the pond so some water effects will be a nice finishing touch.

If you need any help with your water effects Gandalf I have a few tips.

Don't quote me on this but I think it's finished....
Image
Image

The water is as clear as it's going to get I think and I'm not doing a tree anymore. I tried it out in Photoshop and it looks too much. Also, I was looking for engraved plaques for the title but they lacked the personal touch and cost a lot more than I was willing to pay so I knocked the title sign up in ten minutes using scorched brown paint, watercolour paper, a lighter and some tea.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks mate, I may well take you up on that. It will be a long while down the line but I won't forget. I'm only just doing the surround brickwork on the front foot of Bag End so I'm forever away from a pond.

I love the diorama you've done, it's unique and wonderful to look at. The photography is fantastic and I seem to recall you have a talented girlfriend, lucky you.
I'm using a Sony Cybershot with 5 mill pixels. I can't seem to find how to take the best shots as yet i.e. environment etc so if you get the chance could you drop me a line please.
