I like this look. I have a set of WS molds and a set of molds from another company as well. I can save weight over a foam with a plaster cloth shell. I will look over your photos and some from an old white dwarf befor I decide.
I can see in the distant back ground many of the elements you included in your stair. Do you know where I can locate a better photo?

Image

I found this...Looks like cast rock for sure :D

Plenty of photos of the Weta environment behind these links:

http://sideshowcollectors.com/forums/sh ... p?t=125330

http://transparent-aluminium.net/2012/0 ... -of-moria/

http://www.oocities.org/rodimus_99/Review_Moria.html

I used the photos quite extensively to give me the dimensions as well as ideas for my causeway terrain. In fact, I will probably make a photo background based on the Weta environment too, for the battle report photos.

8) Thanks for the links.

Warning my software advised a malicious content was detected on the third site. Make sure your virus protection is up to date 8)

This is what I needed. :D

I should have room to model the other stair and ruins. I also have a better idea how the path to the bridge should look.
I am going to cast floor tiles today 8)

Your terrain projects are always impressive but I'm really looking forward to seeing how this goes.

The old Moria Cave Tiles with the cast upgrade parts. The white tiles don't make a good photo. I may cast enough axe bade flooring to replace the cave floor eventually. I will probably use both.

Image

I am going to leave room for the new Rune Blocks. I won't use the angle blocks until the top. I need to make sure I cast enough.

Image

The rune blocks are 1/8" thick I will be able to add them to both sides and have them recessed about 1/8" The blocks are in standard inches. It is not worth the math to convert.
! should be able to cast enough floor tiles to do three sides by this afternoon.

Thanks Crucium Giger for the nice comments. Thanks Celevue for all the help 8)

I'm looking forward to following your progress! By the way, the rocks behind the stairs look very good - what are they made of?

And sorry for the malware threat - I should have up-to-date protection, and it did not raise an alarm. Maybe it was related to the ads the page seems to load to the right side bar, they seem to vary according to the user (I got stuff from my Amazon UK wish list or browsed items).

I was concerned some one might not be up to date. My system might be set too high.

Some kind of medium density blown foam. I use them for all kinds of mobile back drops.

Image

There are some pine bark cliffs on the left. They are mobile and light we use them at Christmas as well.

The new photos were just what I needed. Thanks again.

Thanks for the link - interesting stuff... apart from an odd Christmas village display (ready-made), that kind of seasonal / decorative model making is not really done at all in Finland.

There is an interesting new material for rock faces by a model railroad scenery company Heki - something they call "rock foil". It's quite thick plasticky material with embossed details. There are various sheets depicting different types of rock formations, and the sheets can be crumbled to more 3D shape, glued or stapled in place, and blended to the landscape with putty. Here's a pic to illustrate the process:

http://products.eurorailhobbiesa.netdna ... H-3501.jpg

I am going to try this stuff for my Helm's Deep terrain, among other rock products (more 3D rock faces by Noch, as well as Woodland rock mold casts).

It looks interesting. I have not tried it.
I will check it out 8)

I am going to look into this product in July at the train Show in Atlanta.

I'd love to try the I.S.L.E. Laboratories products (the MM050x) products on the Scenery Express page, they look great, too. Don't know if they have an European retailer - I fear the shipping costs could be fairly high from the US. Then again, I'll probably do just fine with the Heki and Noch stuff.

Incidentally, the rest of the items on the Scenery Express page (the HK3xxx items) are exactly the Heki rock foils I referred to. I have a pack of each variant (the smaller sheets that come in two a pack) just for testing purposes in various terrain pieces (including Helm's Deep); I'll get more of those which are the most useful. I'm also thinking of using the large granite sheets, with a bits of Dolomite mixed in, to cover the keel-shaped cliff in Minas Tirith once I get that far.

Cool! I will be able to look at them at the Show. Scenic Express and Woodland Scenic will be there.

:? My last two post disappeared. Windows 8 again.

This is the left front section of Balin's tomb. I am going to keep it Modular. The white floor tiles are spacers. I am going to use the cave floor tiles. I need to let the bricks dry before I try to glue them up.
Thanks for the nice comments 8)

I experimented with a removable walk way it should work fine. I will pick up a new saw blade tomorrow and cut the wall section cores.

Windows 8 - not their finest hour. Too many people telling me they are getting flashbacks to Windows Vista and Millennium.
I love modular terrain!

I added the rubble details to the stair. I used a filler that is pink while it is wet but dries white when it is dry. The pink color makes it easy to clean off where you don't want the filler to be.
I have enough arches finished to do half of the tomb.

Image

I have to start laying out the background/Backdrop ruin and back ground stair. I am going to continue casting the Moria mold until it wears out.

The backdrop ruin
It will be built on a MDFB back board. I will attach the back board to the back drop section and blend rock around it. I will lay out the parts to test the concept before I cut or glue any thing.

Image

I ran out of plaster. One more arch will be needed for the down stairs and five for upstairs.
I am using the white floor casts as spacers to keep every thing lined up. I am going to use cave floor tiles on the first floor. Would the chipped floor tiles look better? I think they might be too ordinary looking

I would look toward the chipped tiles. This place is very old and seen many battles so you would expect to see a few chips here and there.
