I decided to modify the 4th stair. I had to trim 3/4" of brick work from the wall section to glue the core for the third stair cause way attachment point. This will make the stair much more stable.

Image

I used the wall builder mold #200 to create the brick work for the façade.
It cut the wall builder sections to size on a table saw. I used and old blade.
The cast are 1/8" glued to a 1/2" MDFB core so that the 1" blocks can be used to dress the ends. This will be stronger and look belter than the first attempt.
I will be able to soak the cast parts from the failed attempt and salvage the parts.
If Mike can come by to day we can finish the glue up on the Inn. I need to cut out a new Island for a MBA building for this week end at Cool mini or not Expo. I should be able to work on some more Middle Earth projects soon after

I love watching how people go about scratch-building terrain - there are so many approaches, each with unique challenges and many shared ones, so hopefully we all learn something in the process. This is shaping up very, very nicely.
Oh - on the subject of pirates (Arrrrrrr!), there is a very neat game called Cutlass from Black Scorpion. Beasts of War did an entire week on it so you can see how to play and the strengths/weaknesses of each faction. And BOW had some very neat terrain including a very pleasing vessel.

I am using WHH Ledgens of the High Seas. I will look into COTBS

I got further on the modifications to the stair. When the glue is dry I will add 1/2" blocks to complete the end caps. It looks much better than the other section. The Two black sections will be glued to the arch the center stair section. The 3 stair section block just below the black will be removable. The fifth and sixth stair sections will be pegged to the top of the MDFB core so that the stair will fit the transport box.

Image

I am going to peg the small column just above the black brick so the bridge can collapse. You can see the wet salvage brick on the end caps of the second arch wall.

Image
Mike came by and glued up more of the Inn.
see link http://www.hirstarts.com/
It would not take up that much room but we are working on two.

Columns for The Moria hall and Balin's tomb

I primed Mike's warlock house too. I was going to cut out a new Island but my back started hurting again so I called it a day.

Having seen this I'm finding it hard to resist ordering some molds but they will have to wait for a time when I can justify getting them. They will only sit in a cupboard at present.
Great work Charlie and love seeing this come together.

I was not able to make a new Island for the scenario. I used a few polished stones and a repainted fish tank decoration with Fred's dock.
LOTR Ruffians figures make good pirates.
Image
These building will work for Dale
I think I will plan a wall and a gate
I will put the pirate boxes back up and work on the stair tomorrow.

Thanks for the nice comments.

I had to snag the Photo from Tabletop Game News. I can not match the professional photographers quality with my snap shot camera. You can see Farmer Magot's corn crop and dog houses if you look close.

Great-looking terrain, love the staircase & Goblin town. I wish I had had a Moria mold when I was building my Moria terrains. Perhaps I could still use one for Erebor!

I posted some pics of my Balin's Tomb terrain over on my WIP / Behind the scenes thread - I hope they are helpful for your project!

It looks very rickety right now because I have changed a few elements to make it transportable. It will have a separate detachable base. The base will help keep it square.

Image

A. bit of sanding will square up the stair. I have not attached the decorative arch.

Image

This stair section is in three parts so that it can be destroyed during a game. I will also have to file one of the floor tiles at the attachment point so it will fit square. In the back ground you can still see some of the MDFB core. I am going to add damaged blocks. I cut 2' from the left side so that I could use whole blocks to model ruble. I need to trim a lot of bricks but I will need to wait a day or so to be sure the glue and newly cast bricks are dry.
I have to cast more blocks for Balin's tomb and a non LOTR project. I won't have many reports while the glue dries and plaster sets.

I need now to plan out the back drop wall. I will be able to keep the model at Treefort so I will go all out. Rock cast or pine bark?:

I am following Bart's brilliant plan from the Tomes of Wisdom.
I have run into a small snag. The plains are metric and my blocks are not. I will have to lay out the blocks or my measurements will be way off. The work Bart did will still be a great help.

I am going to order this mold on the first.
http://keeblerstudios.com/?product=dwarf-runes-mold
I will be able to add runes with out engraving them into the blocks.

I will trim some more brick before I glue this up. I have to make sure the measurements will still work. I need to make 7. Not sure that justifies the expense of a making a mold. There are a few up stairs too. Will have to think about it.

Some comments on textures and Runes would be appreciated!

It will certainly look impressive once you have incorporated the rune tiles in, too. In addition to the seven arches downstairs, there are five + one ruined on the upper level. Perhaps easier to do one by one and not bother with a mold.

The Durin's causeway looks very nice, too. I vote for cast rocks, perhaps some of the smoother Woodland molds - after all, in the movie, the walls looked like they had been worked over in many parts. Then again, might be my bias - I'm just not used to bark rocks.

Looking forward to seeing your progress, keep up the good work!
