The White Council Gandalf is cracking and the paint job on the new Gandalf is shaping up nicely with the NMM looking excellent however there is something just not right with that sculpt, I think someone was either a bit sloshed or forgot to put their glasses on when they did that one :D

Thanks, Crucium G! I can't put my finger on what's wrong with the sculpt either (apart from that hideous face!), although I really like the pose - so dynamic!

Wow!! (many of my posts on this topic seem to be prefixed by that word...)

You are improving so much so fast!
You speak of giving advice on the NMM but to be honest there is none to give! It's perfect!

One thing I think you could work on is perhaps the smoothness, adding more water and more mid tones in between the highlights and the shadows. Otherwise, excellent painting though :yay: :yay:

Also, I really like your Bilbo conversion 8)

The white council Gandalf is incredible. I don't think the hat sits too well on Gandalf's head in that newer pose though. Not your fault, just probably inevitable when they make the hat an optional extra like that.

I'm jealous of all your Gandalfs Matt:P I think the Gandalf look good and all, but you might have a too stark contrast on the white at the top and need some tranistions. What I do when I try my hand a NMM is that I water the paint down like insanely much, so you pretty much work in layers. That way you can build up the tranistions easy =)

Much better Matt, I think te highlights work a treat and I think you can go even lighter on the very highest points but that aside your heading in the right direction.

Thanks for the good advice and nice comments, everyone! It's very encouraging to receive such insightful feedback, thanks a lot!

I had another go at the NMM on Glamdring and am much happier with the result now. I redid the blade using blues to give it a sort of enchanted - special look... And after all, the Glamdring in the book glows blue when Orcs are near, too. Took me ages though!

(Excuse the blurriness)

I've also made a lot of progress on the new Gandalf sculpt...

Some of you may have noticed that the highlights on the first photo are much stronger (almost white - I finally tried it out guys haha) than on the second. This is intentional - my first try at OSL. What I'm aiming to emulate is the sun shining on Gandalf's left side (the first photo), which would put G's right side (second pic) in the dark - hence the duller highlights. Will be interesting to see how it turns out, I'm thinking of adding a shadow on the base, too...

Very well painted. NMM can look fantastic, even sublime. OSL IMHO is more suited to dioramas as the viewer gets to 'see' the source of the light in a fixed relationship to the mini or minis incorporated into the scene.

Thanks for the comment, Dorth! I see what you mean about the OSL, I just wanted to give it a try and I though combined with NMM it could turn out quite nicely - we'll see! As I'm not much if a gamer, this fig will probably be more of a show-piece/mini diorama anyway; I intend to put some effort in the base and experiment with water effects for the first time :P

Nice work again Matt. The extra highlights on the first picture work very good and I presume this is your light source judging by the other pictures.

So yeah... after almost two years away I decided to get back into painting.

Here are some of the things I've started working on in the last couple of days; a Gandalf conversion (giving him his Fellowship scarf and adding Glamdring in a scabbard) and painting up a BotF Aragorn. Please excuse the poor lighting, I'm working on it.

Image

Aragorn. One of my favourite poses. Unfortunately, half way through painting him, I realised the scabbard's tip had broken off so I went about crafting him a new one; easier said than done. I'm pretty impressed with how he's turning out... Looks like my two year break hasn't impaired my painting, even if I do say so myself.

Image

Gandalf conversion. What was supposed to be a routine conversion turned into quite a nightmare. Unfortunately, you can't really see Glamdring very well yet.

Image

A close up of Gandalf's cloak. Going for a well-weathered browny-grey to match his appearance in Fellowship.

Thanks for looking, see you around.
