Hello all,

I own the EFGT starter set, and i am looking to expand my collection to get some LOTR armies (thinking gondor and morder or isengard). I actually like the MoM starter set, it gives a good few battles in one of my favorite scenes (Balins Tomb) along with the fellowship + a good starting point of Mordor i believe?

However, is it worth picking up? Is it even being produced anymore? (i have a local shop that still has one).

I am guessing the rulebook is completely outdated, so can the scenarios in it still be played following the new rules and be balanced?

If you want to play Moria, then that set is pretty much essential!

Yep, I'd say it's a very starter set
The detail on the fellowship isn't so good but it's cheap, and it's great for an army starter/booster.
For the moria part of the set you will need a few heroes to make it legal for warbands rules (a moria comanders box might do well here)

The MoM rulebook also contains many of the major profiles for LoTR which is handy

Back in the classic SBG days GW didn't get cheap/tricky/evil with separation of points and profiles.

The MoM set is of less 'value' now that the rules aren't current but it's a good way to get a cave troll (decent detail even if plastic) a nice start of Goblins and the Fellowship. As mentioned the detail in the plastic Fellowship isn't as good as the detail in the more recent plastics but it's a very good way to get some models you'll use in a lot of lists. Legolas and Gimli are very useful and versatile Heroes. Gandalf is a fantastic option when you want to play a Wizard (the other Wizards are really good too and each fit different roles). Since you already have a really nice Gandal with the EfGT set maybe you could do some converting and paint differences and make him into one of the Blue Wizards. Aragorn and Boromir are great but at higher point games. I personally don't use the Hobbits much but I know a lot of people do. The little terrain that comes with the set is an extra bonus.

So as long as the price is good (remember, the rule book really can't be factored in that much any more) pick it up.

I can't count how many times I've used that well...even had one game where you got extra victory points for tossing a body down it

Agreed. The terrain is a really nice feature. It really helps spice up a game

Agreed. Even in a recent "big" Moria style game we had some of the MoM terrain in the mix and it really added to the flavor.

Thanks to a member on this site, I recently completed my MoM set (fully painted, figures based, gaming board…) and it's quite awesome to see everything on display.

As others have already stated, the terrain pieces really give that “wow” factor!

The characters aren't very detailed, and I’m not a big fan of the plastic troll. The chain gets in the way all the time!

The Balin’s tomb scenario in the sourcebook is balanced thanks to the addition of two trapdoors, but I hear that the FotR journey book version is even better

The very back of the source book has all of the models points values / profiles … it's beautiful.
