Collecting LOTR figures can get out of hand in a hurry. So how do you keep track of what you have, what you have to trade and what you need?

How do you store what you do have?

On the forum or just for yourself?

I have all the collector guides and catalogues which I check off with a pencil and write a little number in if I have multiples.
I know there is a fan produced downloadable checklist stickied at the top of this section of the forum made by mini man.

WellI did have a spread sheet, but forgot to update it. I now write on paper, but I still haven't updated it properly.

I like to not catalog my minis...I like the feeling of discovering maybe a blister/miniature/box I completely forgot about in my unpainted miniatures box! But in genreal I have rather few miniatures because I do have very very few plastic miniatures, 90% ist metal so barely a 150 minis in total I guess-that doesn't make it very hard to approximately know what miniatures I have ;)

I record all mine in a spreadsheet. I keep it by army and the sheet calculates the bow limits and number of heroes required for each army. Current totals are 822 painted out of 1228. I don't keep a record of duplicates - they just get dumped in my bits box for trading/ conversions.

I dont, but I do need to figure something out. I keep my painted minis on my display shelves, but lately now that ther are people to play my collection has become disorganized. Mainly due to me pulling from the display armies that then go in my case to take to GW. I keep my backlog organized into shoe boxes and out of sight of my paint desk though to avoid becoming discouraged by the quantity. I finish a box, add them to the shelf then go grab another.

I use memory. But then again, that's not saying much as I only have around 200 models ( about 85% painted)

I have a paper somewhere but I don't know where it is. I also have several spreadsheets, which I have not updated for years.

However, most of the minis are stored in small cardboard boxes with labels describing their contents and those small boxes are stored in larger boxes again with precise labelling. I know the location of any miniature of my collection and usually the status (unopened blister, assembled, based, primed, ...) of any of them. Quite funny considering my sorry cataloging efforts.

I have an excel sheet neatly organised into realms and armies, of which I check off the miniatures I have and I can see the ones I still 'need'/ want to collect.

I use spreadsheets as well. I have force-specific army builders and just have a tab at the start of those that includes all my models and the current state (painted, wip, not started). It's an easy way to see what I can actually get on the table and in what condition.

As others, I haven't really updated it in a while, but thanks to GW prices I haven't really added to it in a while anyway so the counts should be close, though the state of models has changed. Last time I updated it was 175 painted, 33 wip, 320 unpainted. I probably added about 50-70 models to the backlog since then and I know I've finished the 33 I had wip at that time since I'm working on about 20 different ones now. I'm looking to pick up some from a fellow player getting out of the hobby and may pick up EfGT next month so I'll probably do a fresh count of everything as it's been close to a year.

My collection got out of hand years ago so I am going to dispose of all the WH40K stuff to make room for LotR and Hobbit minis that are sitting in boxes. I probably have most of the LotR excepts the GW concocted stuff, but only the LE box for the Hobbit. I don't bother with lists as that would just be something else to lose in yet another box.

Like many i use a spreadsheet to record all the miniatures that I have, by type and quantity. For example Rohan Warrior w/spear (1) x 24, yep that specific. I also keep a seperate wants list on my phone for those chance buying opportunities... Though this list is pretty small, just a couple of the new The Hobbit releases so I know it from memory too... I store my minis by armies, so I have a big box for Mordor, another for Isengard etc etc... The painted stuff goes into a display cabinet...

I use word documents making boards with columns and categories eg. one column for painted evil miniatures and the other for the unpainted ones and then I divide the painted section according to armies eg. Mordor, Isengard etc. for the names and descriptions I use the GW descriptions

Like some have already said, I've records made on all manner of pages & notebooks but moved to excel about 2years ago but then left it outdated until I recently came back to the hobby.
I've updated the spreadsheet and uploaded it online to Google Drive so I can always access and update the same central sheet wherever I have wifi access.

I've the spreadsheet sorted into factions and the miniatures broken down into each version of each named character with rank & file figures recorded as type & quantity as per Tabletop_horses above - model type, made from, weapon type, quantity.

e.g.
98 Warriors of Minas Tirith - plastic - on foot
- 4 Std Bearers - metal
- 34 Spearmen
- 29 Swordsmen
- 31 Archers

For the multiple versions or duplicates of characters, I also keep notes on what I aim to use them for/convert them with so it acts as more than just a bare numbers catalogue and keeps old ideas from disappearing!

I'm just short of 1500 figures (just a collection/horde, very few painted) so I needed to keep a decent record to keep in check my Hobbit spending!

I only keep record of my finished models
and I do that in a little green book I salvaged from incomplete childhood drawing books, and I keep as safe as a sourcebook, once in while I update it for point values or like when I converted 90% of my goboes with shields into prowlers, as such I always tend to leave some room for changes

Or you could just write in pencil or friction pen?
