I've found some Riders of Rohan that I must have bought years ago and I want to strip them down and paint them up. Unfortunately the horses' legs are almost all snapped. Does anyone know of any decent - cost effective - matches for these horses?

You could superglue the legs back on - worked for me

Ebob makes lovely (metal) horses:

Note that these do not have saddles or reins.

I don't have the snapped off bits, these models are almost a decade old and have moved house twice. They're probably in landfill now.

Here is a comparison of Conquest Games Norman horse and a GW horse.



They are same size but the Conquest Games horse is a bit bulkier. Therefore you need to file a bit away from the sides to get the rider on its back but that's not a big deal.



Here is how the horse looks with a rider (the leftmost guy has a Norman horse). The filing is not noticeable unless you know what you are looking for, and it could be done a lot tidier than how I did it.

They are slightly cheaper than Conquest (and possibly significantly cheaper than Wargames Factory since you're in the UK), but maybe visually inappropriate for Rohirrim.

Put a pin in the broken leg and sculpt a new hoof. That's what I would do.

Yes but you're a professional sculptor! I however have no sculpting experience whatsoever! Also I'd have to buy green stuff and sculpting tools, and a drill, and some pins.

Semi-pro actually ,but I see your point. Surely though you have green stuff for gap filling miniatures? And do you not pin the joints on metal monsters?

I don't have any metal monsters and gaps have never been a problem for me, probably because of my aversion to large models. I imagine that is like fingernails on a chalkboard to you!!

Horses pop up every now and again on ebay...

I'd most certainly recomend getting some green stuff though. It adds a whole new aspect to the hobby

I have/ had several large metal model and have never pinned a single one. However, I see that changing when my cave drake arrives. Never gap filled either, never needed to.

Mid Sussex Wargamers

Are we talking about Games Workshop minis? I probably have 90% of all their models and can count very few amongst the multipart ones that do not need gap filling to some degree. I suppose it depends if you are prepared to live with unsightly lines in your collection or not. Things like plastic wargs for instance just look silly to me unless the mane is sculpted over to hide the joins.
As for pinning heavy models, I have heard too many horror stories of lovely paint jobs being ruined when a fell beast or cave troll is accidentally knocked over on the game board resulting in an arm or wing snapping off at the join.
Pinning first strengthens the join, as does greenstuffing around it and blending it in to the model. Thankfully this hasn't happened to me but I put that down to good prep work.
GW recommend that you pin their models and fill gaps with greenstuff (albeit regular or liquid) and for once I actually agree with them.

I agree with you as well ukfreddybear, I just assembled the Rivendell Knights yesterday (I'll post some pictures later of an interesting mistake from the box) and Elrond Foot and Mounted, 2 of the Rivendell knights will need a gap along their head filled do to there being to much of a space and the Mounted Elrond needs a large space filled at his waist.

@ Curfinwe: please post pictures of these defections

@ LordElrond: the filling isn't really a defect just that they don't always like up as well as they should given how they are glued together. I'll take a few pictures and post them for you.
