Is it me or are the scenarios in the Hobbit starterset very unbalanced? I've played most of the scenarios several times. And it is almost always the same side who wins. For example in the 5th scenario with Gandalf and Bilbo against the goblinking en his horde, it is almost impossible for de good side to win. Evil has priority and the goblins must be placed at least 6" from de good guys. So the goblinking can charge Gandalf already in the first turn. It just an unequal battle??

The scenarios in the starter set generally favor Evil.

I was very disappointed by them, since it's only in the last one you get to actually use pretty much all the rules, so I was expecting another scenario with all the good models and all the evil ones, full ruleset, GO! But that wasn't the case.

I haven't even read them, if you know the game, they serve no purpose at all, and if you don't IMHO, you're better off just starting with the simple rules (only the normal phases) and then slowly adding in the rest as you want. More fun and works just as well.

The goblin king does start in the 5th scenario.

The first mission (get the 4 dwarfs off) ... good look Good forces
The mission where balin, thorin and dwalin are defending.... unless the evil rolls for the Goblin King really early on... GOOD LOOK EVIL!

The Book
Roast Mutton... nearly impossible for trolls if you use the set up from the film.

I've only played the first scenario once, but the good side got all their models off on turn 9. Gloin and Fili side by side on the narrow walkway, using throwing weapons on the charge, with Oin's prognostication helping them win fights, let them cut through the horde handily. I recommend keeping Kili back on the platform to make bowshots to help thin out the goblins, until they're almost to the second platform.
I've played Scenario 2 several times, and Evil always wins. I have some questions about this one, actually: (i) can the goblins also leap the indicated gap? (ii) even if not, why don't the goblins line up on edge of the platform so the dwarves have nowhere to land, forcing them to go the long way round? Regardless, the good models have always gotten surrounded and slaughtered.
In scenario 4, can the Goblin King use Barge? Move beaten enemies 3" in a direction of your choosing... why not off the rickety walkways to their deaths?
