Dettol

what detto do you take because dettol is a brand, and I dont think handsoap will strip minis.

It is some kind of soap u can buy in the farmacy. It really works

Been stripping some metals for the first time, used dettol. That black gloop is horrible.
I picked it out of the deepest recesses with a needle but it was hard since its like melted rubber.

Gonna try some other products to get rid of the gloop but to get rid of the paint dettol really works.

Be prepared to walk around with black smudges on your hands all day guys ;P

I'm using Dettol and my minis have been soaked for 24 hours and still no cigar. A little of the top layers comes off with a scrub, but nothing beyond that. What gives?

I'm using Dettol Spray, the clear stuff, poured into a tub.

You want the brown dettol, comes in a bottle with a handle. I think its the antiseptic one. All I know is that I'm in a lot of trouble with the misses as it stinks the house out.

I'm currently stripping all of my 40k tau stuff back. I had a real tough time getting the paint off of my Galadhrim Elves and my Wood elves, the dettol became like a soup that clung to all of the models, I can only assume I put too many minis in.

Also I wouldn't just run in under water straight after you've dettoled it, wash it in very very soapy water first to remove the dettol from the model, then rinse the soapy water away with plain water. I found that the dettol/paint mixture that was left on the models congealed and stuck to the model when washed with water.

very sorry to revive an old thread but i am planning to do this soon and i had some questions...

1. what does it do to glue?
2. what does it do to green stuff?
3. is there any special method for doing this? (ie. 'just leave it in the dettol for ages' or 'dunk it in the dettol and scrub it every now and again')

to glue - well glued parts mostly come lose
green stuff no clue
no special method - leave the stuff for 1-2 days in pure dettol and start scrubbing off - if needed repeat process , the longer in it the easyr it should losen up
i am trying to use thined dettol now - it didn't work to well, so i left them in again and i ll try to scrubb off what hasn't losened up yet. There were some parts coming off tough - but those wings i was cleaning still looked like a bird covered in oil

I missed this thread first time around. It amazes me when other applications people devise for humdrum materials and products. I have never stripped paint off any models (yet) but this one is being filed for future reference. I wonder how effective it is versus the various types of varnishes that people use?

1 Any glue I've used comes off, (Revell and Humbrol plastic glues, Citadel, Bison and random superglue), though sometimes you're in luck and it sticks.
2 Greenstuff tends to stay put, though it sometimes comes off in the scrubbing. The sculpting is not marred.
3 Stick in in and leave it there for a day, usually. Now I'm trying to leave it there for a week after a first scrub, to get the gloop out. Results will be reported tomorrow.

Ive been using Dettol for as long as i can remember to strip models, always works fine for me. I use a 3:1 solution of water + Dettol, and usually leave my models for the best part of a week, then soak them in hot soapy water for an hour or so, then use elbow grease and a toothbrush to scrub off the horrible goo. If you put in the work, the results are fantastic.

i use nail polish remover with acetone for metals and without acetone for plastics - no toothbrush required .

Longer you leave it in the cleaner it comes out - just be sure to give it a good wash when it comes out of the acetone.

Yeh the checkout person would take one look at your bright pink nail varnished nails and say yes Sir that colour really doesn't suit you - try the orange.
