Yep, against 'dislike button' for already said reason by myself and now Azog. Doesn't mean we can't have a 'like button'.

The purpose of a 'like button' would be that it strengthens a post, where dropping a one-liner of "I agree" or "Well done" would do that as well even though it doesn't add any new content to the topic thread. So for example someone leaves a post that you happen to agree upon, but you don't want to drop a single line and you have nothing new to contribute, so you end up doing nothing. In the end the poster is just left to the sounds of crickets thinking no one agrees with him.

I know I would appreciate having a 'like button' when sifting through gallery pictures instead of dropping a small line of "good job".

What is the point of a 'Like' button? \

Ok, yes, I know it's popular on Facebook and I'm a regular clicker of it myself. But Facebook is a trivial waste of time for poorly educated, potential wife-beaters and/or cat owners (argue with me and I'll lock the post) whereas here we are a thriving community of like-minded, lucid intellectuals who enjoy vibrant and vigorous discussions about a wide range of topics.*

So convince me that we need a Like button (note that I'd have to program it from scratch)

* Please note the attempt at ironic humour in the above comments

"Like" 8)
This certainly has not saved any space or really added anything except my agreement. So + 1 for the like button :!: :!: :!:

I have to agree that is a pretty cute kitten.. wouldn't mind 'liking' that :-D

But maybe we should leave it until later when we have more of the sites functions working again + looking pretty.

I think it wil be a loooooonng long wait for a like button if that is the way that the dark lord himself decides to go as it is a LOT of work to integrate into the site.

Nice rabbit :)

I'm not sure how easy this is to code, but I found these:

The first enables a 'Like' of topics only.

The second discusses a mod that can be used to 'like' individual posts.

Here is a direct link to the second.

Everytime I see a picture of your cat OMW, it looks like it is stuffed...

Well, it would be nice to have a 'like button', but not necessarily dying for one.

I don't think anyone means "exactly like Facebook", but rather "a feature that offers support". And Facebook didn't invent it, some sort of Like or +1 or Recommended or Thank idea has been around since the late 90s.

The old Gold Coins were great! The cool thing was you had to earn them, which gave incentive to produce something of quality, or support the site directly.

Ah the gold coins. I have fond memories of earning them and upgrading my inventory every so often. I miss that. :(

Thanks for the links Shieldmaiden, I missed those when I went hunting for an off-the-shelf mod. I don't like the first one - it's too basic and there's no way to 'unlike' something if you've changed your mind.

The second one is better and if we can configure it to stop showing the post ratings then I'd be interested in using it here. I'd also look at adapting it for use in the galleries and article library as well (without the ratings), but that would take a significant coding effort on my part - certainly something I could do, but don't hold your breath for it.

It could form the basis for an updated version of the old Gold Coin system too. Hmm, now that's an interesting idea.

It was nice giving them out as well :-)

Yes I would welcome the coins back but you can't rush coding I'm afraid even if Alan thinks it's an option he can work on.

+1 Ahhhhh, just busting your balls! (hate that +1 stuff too)

Seriously though the coin system was really cool, but I'm sure it would take alot of effort to re-implement it.

No matter whether or not, you (The One Ring admin people) will be able to or have enough time to code the "like button" or bring back the gold coin mechanics, I just want to thank you for all the efforts put fort to run The One Ring site. You are doing a terrific job and I appreciate your hard work. This is a great site for Lord of the Rings fan from all over the world. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Callan
