I got to test out the new paints today!

Each shop was sent a small selection of colours, a chart and some nifty little cards, as well as two red paint stations.

The Pot!
The new pot design is fantastic, each paint is sealed with a "dragon tooth" seal, the lip is higher and there's a small tab that keeps the paint open. The pots are easy to open, but very secure and wont dry out. The new pots are a million times better than the old ones and there's nothing to complain about there!

Citadel Base Paints
The base paints work lovely, they're thinner than foundations but the coverage is the same, if not better. The colours are nice and bright compared to the foundations, which was always an annoyance for me as I found the foundations too dark.

Citadel Shades
The shades are brilliant, they took everything good about the washes and made them better, they're not too harsh or soft and settle in all the places they're meant too. Plus they don't smell like something crawled into your wash and died.

Citadel Dry Compounds
I only got to test these a little, but they're great, easy to use and apply and allows us to drybrush with some of colours we couldn't because the paints were too thin.

Citadel Layer Paints
I found I didn't even need to thin the layer paints, and they still gave great coverage. With the huge array of colours these will work lovely.

Citadel Glazes
I only got to test one glaze, but it worked as I expected, like a glaze! Brilliant for the lazy people like myself!

Citadel Texture Paints
Again, brilliant for lazy people like myself, I simply slapped some of this onto the base and Hey Presto, my base was painted. The texture is very natural looking, much better than sand!

Finally they had these very nifty cards, one for each army. So I grabbed one of each

The new shades are interesting.
With the current (or old) washes I have the problem that it turns grey.

Nice to hear they are good, I've already seen some paint used on models, wich turned out great!

I'm interested in the Dry Compounds; are they sort of like pigments? I don't really understand what they are--even the GW website described them as really hard to explain.

I'm not so sure if it was such a great marketing strategy to start completely over with the paint range, to be honest. The only thing tying me to Games Workshop now is hobby supplies, but this seems like a perfect time to invest more in other hobby ranges I've explored before. In other words, even if some of the colors have only changed in name only, I no longer feel dependent on GW for "Bestial Brown" or "Blood Red."

Oh, also--the LotR, 40K, and WHFB paint sets are still a phenomenal deal, but now the models on the box seem to have actually been painted with the brush and paints that come in the box only. The difference in quality is very noticeable

They're like a thick gloopy paint, which you apply a small amount to your brush and do the usual "wipe away most of it onto a tissue", and then drybrush with it. It's pretty much the same, but because the pigment is high and the paint thicker it works a lot better than the old paints, where they'd usually be too thin.

And they're all released on the 7th April

Couldn't they have made a drybrush paint that doesn't require wiping paint off so it as actually decent value?

There is no way I'm going to pay €450 euro's for a set.
I don't know if I would use all the colours.

^Can you use all the colours up in a couple of years? It would be great motivation for you to reduce your backlog before the paint goes dry.

In regards to the "nifty cards", I just searched the GW site to get more info, but I was unable to find any. Are they available for retail atm? I enjoy painting so the cards will definitely help.

I have some pots of paint that date back to the beginning of the hobby, about 10 years ago.
They won't dry out and if they do it is easy to get them back to liquid form.

@Dezartfox, if you put textured paint on the base, say a dark colour, could you drybrush some lighter colours over it and it actually look decent?

the paint looked nice when i tried them and they have sorted the lid out, just once agan the price annoys me, but this is GW so i am not surprised with sneaking in an extra few p

thanks for the date of release...hmmm I think I will just get a couple from each catagory of new paints, not sure if you could use the glaze for many lotr models though?

I was wondering on the same.
