HA! Geniuses think alike..... :D
Hopefully you can find the base for the shade so we can see him all finished up. Though, I am also really looking forward to seeing your haradrim painted up. Are you planning on going for a GW style colour scheme, or a more realistic brown/tan type one? (Like the one in the article section here on the O-R)

Haha lol.

The shade looks a bit crazy. He didn't look finished so I went crazy and added stuff. Now he is very Unique. We'll see how he goes.

As for the haradrim.

I am not going to do them like the GW ones. That colour scheme is unrealistic. For starters it is dark colours. Terrible for a hot climate, and it uses purple, a very expensive colour for common soldiers to wear.

I googled pictures of arabic people and arabic soldiers and noticed that they wore a lot of white and light brown. I noticed that nearly all of them wore white under garments. Which makes sense. The pictures of soldiers also showed that they seemed to wear what they wanted to wear, not a specific uniform. After googling the Taliban, I noticed a lot of black turbans and what not.

So my Haradrim army will be dressed like so...
Most will have white undergarments (pants and undershirts) as well as a fair few white turbans and white overgarments.
Light brown will be a common theme in a large majority of the over garments.
Black will be seen here and there amongst the turbans and some other clothing items.
Red will be speckled throughout the army here and there to show their allegiance with Sauron.
Many of the cloaks will be scarlet, as mentioned in the Two Towers novel. Some will be white, maybe light brown.
The harad king will have a purple cloak to show wealth and to stand out.

I am trying to paint my army in a logical and realistic manner.

samoht, I am very interested in seeing that. I don't want to get ahead of myself in case I can't commit, but I'm planning on collecting some medieval miniatures for skirmish games set in the latter Crusades, and, maybe, a campaign for the Ninth Crusade. I'm planning on using "Age of the Trebuchet" rules, a variant of LotR SBG. Anyway...Muslim warriors are hard to find in bulk, and I've long considered using Warriors of Harad. I was wondering how you're going to deal with the armor--are you still going to paint it gold? Do you think it would be possible to paint it in such a way that it would look less Middle-earth, more Middle East?

Yeah I think I will paint it gold.

It would be worth experimenting with different armour colours. Try some dark silvers. Also try gold. In fact try mixing boltgun metal with gold.

Now that you've brought this to my attention, I think I am going to have to experiment with some different armour colours too. A dark goldish silver comes to mind.

I don't know when I'll get around to doing it but hopefully soon.

For a cheaper alternative to arab soldiers, might I suggest giving the Wargames Factory Persian infantry a look. They look a bit different. They may not be what you're looking for or they may fit the bill perfectly. There are not many pictures of them though.

Samoht, great. :) I now really look forward to seeing these figures as I am hoping to start up a haradrim army at some point, and am planning on going with the realistic approach too. So with pictures from you and the article by Haldir, I should be good to go. :yay:

Thanks for the tip. I've just had a look at the picture on the website and thought I'd finally found what I'd been looking for! But after a quick Google search and look at some of the other minis, it seems that the approximately 1800-year difference between the Persian-Greco War Persians and Ninth Crusade era Mamelukes does indeed show itself quite clearly. Still, it might be worth buying an individual sprue to at least try it. Even with their armor and spikey bitz, the Haradrim seem to be a better alternative for medieval Arabs than the Persians--though I currently have none of either.

Its funny, I had a dream last night that I saw another Harad model painted with light sandy browns. It looked awesome.

I remember when you where sculpting the troll. You've given him an excellent paintjob too. The Haradrim conversions are nicely done. Good Work!

It relieves me somewhat to know I am not the only one who dreams about LotR minis

Amazing conversions! I'm afraid to do conversion with arms and stuff. It seems like it might make them much more prone to break.

OK. Here is the shade. I am yet to find his base.

I am going to paint him green similar to the army of the dead.

Yikes! That looks really crazy and disjointed, but in a good way. A shade is a bunch a tortured spirits forced into one (kinda) cohesive body/unit afterall.
PS. I like how you have three different putties going on... :-D

Pretty cool shade! Is there a reason for the different colors of putty?

Thanks guys.

There is no major reason. I used the orange stuff for the main body coz it was cheaper and in more quantity. The more finely detailed stuff is greenstuff. For the absolute best detail I used kneadatite. The grey stuff. Coz its the best. I try and spare my good putties. Also, sometimes when i had certain putty left over I would just use it to make faces on the shade.
