The hands will probably need cutting off at the wrist so that you can twist them in line with the opposite hand. If you need to bend an elbow, cut or file a 'V' shape on the inside which will allow you to bend the arm. Not much I can suggest with the gap filling. It's just a case of blending the putty into the shape of the area it is replacing.
I don't know if you've seen the Uruk scout with two handed axe I did for DMS? It might help you out a little.
