I have been quite busy away from the hobby so I apologise as it has been 8 months since my last update. Anyhow, lets get those last four riders of the dead made shall we?

First up, i took my four plastic Warhammer skeleton horses and reposed them by either bending or cutting and glueing.

Horse 4 now has the head of Aragorns mount as i cut them up doing my mounted King of the Dead earler this year. I will use it as a captain of the dead, utilising Natarns splendid cast.

The other 3 riders are regular AotD, which I cut away.

Image

If you want to do this, feel free to add the legs of other mounted donors. I don't want to sacrifice any other minis so I will make my own.

Image

Starting with a regular paperclip, straighten it out, then bend it in half, before finally twisting the end together which will be inserted into a hole that has been drilled in the riders torso.

Image

Fix the wire in place with a spot of glue or Greenstuff like I have here. Leave the riders for now and move on to the horses.

Image

A decent source for reference is a good idea to help keep things accurate. The picture above is useful as it shows muscles, bones, and organs. Lay strips of putty onto the skeleton using the pictures as a rough guide. It doesn't have to be 100 percent spot on, as most of it will be eventually covered by either cloth, skin or the rider. I like to leave a bit of the skeleton showing too so don't add in all the muscles.

Next update: adding skin.

This will hardly be my best work. I just need to get them done quickly as I have other projects to be getting on with for a paying client.

Had time to read through the rest of this thread and I must say it is nothing short of sensational what you can do with a bit of putty and a few tools!! Amazing!!! Glad you work for me :D

The muscle looks really good so far, having seen your sculpting many times before I can honestly say I am looking forward to watching these riders progress and I am sure they will look great.

Quick update.

I've been adding patches of skin here and there to the horses. Here is an example of what I mean. very simple really. You just add as much or as little as you wish.

Next I'll probably add in some details like mane and tail.

The muscle showing between the torn flesh and the bone is a really nice touch. Theses are going to be fantastic when theyre painted up. I think I'm getting slightly jealous of them.. Might have to add some of these to my ever growing list but we'll leave that until I get to the Aotd. Just a thought but you could have one with loads of internal organs etc hanging from its stomach ... that would be pretty disgusting but it would look savage!!!!

Yeh I could do that with one of them. Good idea.

Right so here is how easy it is to do the mane and tail. The principal is the same for hair on characters.

Just add a sausage of putty to the area where the hair needs to be.

ImageImage

Then take a hobby knife and drag wavey lines down through it in the direction of the hair flow. Simple.

ImageImage

I need to add the ragged barding now, but it might be easier to position the rider first. I'll have a think on that. In the meantime, let's switch our attention to the Uruk-hai captain with the two-handed axe in Dead Marsh Spectres thread. After a lengthy but unsuccessful search for one of the original casts, he opted to commission me to make one for him.

The above pics show the development of the armature, gradually building up muscles. Unfortunately my camera broke so I could not take any more development pics, but I did get a new one in time for the finished sculpt.

Pictures of the superbly painted and based model can be found in Dead Marsh Spectre's thread:

Fantastic sculpting - your dead horses are fantastic and quite frightening too... And the uruk - a unique piece!

The horse is progressing nicely. As for the uruk, it's absolutely fantastic. Great job recreating that rare sculpt, it looks perfect.

Nice work on the horse. The disembowled one idea sounds interesting, I'll be interested to see how it all works out.

Now, that uruk. Wow. That looks so great. Super awesome that you could do such a good job from just a couple of pictures for reference. :yay:
