So i've set to the task of making an entirely themed army from Arnor, however, i'm using a themed list so i cannot combine some of the present formations with the old ones. I decided that i would time this army as Aragorn's a small contingency of warriors and rangers, and includes Halbarad before he was killed at Pelennor.

Aragorn - 200pts

Rangers of Arnor - 60pts
-2x Companies

Rangers of Arnor - 60pts.
-2x Companies

Warriors of Arnor - 185pts.
-4x Companies
-Captain, Banner Bearer

Warriors of Arnor - 185pts.
-4x Companies
-Captain, Banner Bearer

The Grey Company - 245pts.
-3x Companies
- Banner of the King

935pts.

I may add in a fortune, but i was thinking that i might drop the captains and add in Radaghast. However i am not sure that he fits in with the theme of the army, would he have fought with Aragorn? I know he didn't fight much in the novels, but its still something to consider. What about allies? Who could i ally into the army and still maintain my theme, perhaps elves, but would they mostly be from rivendell and not Mirkwood?

All advice welcome!

I would go for something like this:
Aragorn - 200pts
Thranduil - 125pts
Faramir (renamed to smt of your choosing to represent a sergeant or smt) -90

Rangers of Arnor - 90pts
-3x Companies

Rangers of Arnor - 90pts.
-3x Companies

Warriors of Arnor - 100pts.
-4x Companies

Warriors of Arnor - 100pts.
-4x Companies

Warriors of Arnor - 100pts.
-4x Companies

Warriors of Arnor or Knights of Arnor -100pts
-4x Companies

995 points, 6 formations, 22 companies, 10 +1 might

I find captains are not worth their points, so its almost always better to get a hero instead. I know grey Company suits the theme but they are overpriced I think and the Rangers can fill that role anyway. You could also swap on of the Warrior formations for a Knight Formation, which would help with mobility but not sure if fits the theme, but that something I would do. You can swap out a hero for another formation as well if you want but thats also entirely up to you.

Noddwyr's suggestions are good, but I dont quite agree about captains not being worth their points. They bolster courage, add might points for duels or other uses, plus aid mobility in access to At The Double Rule! as with many companies of heavy infantry you want to be in close and personal.

In this particular case Warriors of Arnor are as flakey as Moria Goblins, with Courage 2. If you dont take the Grey company with Aragorn in it, or some captains in a pinch you will find some difficulties when you lose fights.

By taking the Grey Company, and keeping Aragorn in there you get the benefit of the Inspring leader any where on the board, ofsetinng that pitiful courage.

a large army of 22 companies looks good for 1000 points, but you do need something to boost courage and mobility , you need something between your original plan and Noddwyr's suggestion, In my opinion.

Renamed Knights of Minas Tirith, I would assume seeing that they're the same price as the Warriors of Arnor.

I agree with daersalon in taking the Grey Company with Aragorn being useful in keeping troops from breaking and that might be a cheaper alternative than taking captains or epic heroes for every formation. However, you will still want a hero of some kind with each formation in order to AtD, heroic moves, etc. I'd almost certainly drop the banners in any non-cavalry unit. I'd say with Noddwyr's suggested list to not take cavalry because the infantry will be less fragile and more consistent in it's effectiveness. The Counter-Spell might be a useful fortune if you have the points for it.

Hi Thelordcal, I think that is workable as a themed list since you get a lot out of the strong gondor/arnor base troops.

I can see the use of Captains, especcially if you are keeping in theme with heroes but I'd lose those banner. That's 70 + 65 loose points floating that is a whole 6 coy worth of Warriors or Knights or another single formation with a captain.

Have none of you noticed that thelordcal posted this in February and is a little outdated now, so don't keep responding unless you don't mind wasting your own posts. :)

Aragorn didn't have any soldiers before Halbarad died. If you want a themed force, take the Royal Court of Arnor, Rangers and Soldiers of Arnor. Then ally in Glorfindel. He's really the only themed elf you can take that would really be able to fit in. Elrond is so much that you wouldn't be able to take any elves with him.

Elladan and Elrohir should be thematically fine.

They were never mentioned as being there, but I guess they would fit. I just never really consider them, what with their 1 resistance and 1 might.

Yes, The sons of Elrond often journeyed/fought with the Dunedain, and helped in the defence of Arnor against Angmar. In the books too, they were in the Grey Company and gave the Banner of Gondor to Aragorn before travelling with him through the Paths of the Dead, and were at the Pelennor fields. These boys get around, and have been around a long time too. They could be thematically in more lists than most Epic Heroes...

And of Course handy cheap Epics to use instead of Captains :)
