Rohan Royal knights on Dol amroth horses!

I collect lotr but also 40k. some 40k freinds of mine have seen my lotr models and i have given them a game to encourge them. two of them realy want to collect now!. so we all decided to finish our armies up to 1500 points, then we move onto lotr wotr.

Becasue of this i have been frantacly reading the WOTR book for insipring armies to collect based on their rules and how they look.

The other day I was bored and so was looking though my models for inspiration for a new army. I looked at my knights of dol amoth mounted put them back down and then pivoted my head and saw my rohan royal knights mounted and put them back down. then in a blink of an eye i found myself pulling the royal knight of his horse and placing him on the dol amroth horse( conveniently none of these were glued, i used blue tac temporarly). Had a couple of looks turned him 360 and decided that i was onto somthing

. I thought to myself that these knights would be perfect for the kings guard formation.

with the right paint scheme I think these royal guard would look far more royal with their new horses.

so what do you think? Be honest tell me if they look stupid, if you like them, also can you all please help me think of what colour to paint the horses cloak? :roll:

I for one think that the plainsman would be a little . . . well more plain. Although that's the good part of this hobby is that it allows for a lot personal customization and personal taste.

Are you referring to the general riders like the ones that come in more numbers both in models and films? if so you are right i would use these dol amroth horses fo them just for the kings guard and perhaps norm guard companies.

But even Theoden himself is not opulent in his lifestyle and needs. Rohan is characterized by ordinary men trying to lead ordinary lives. But again this is more my interpretation. I look forward to seeing them painted! Maybe that will change my mind.

Ah right i see your point, aesthetically they look great but in reality with the books they dont make sense.... right i understand what your saying. Unlike gondor rohan dont have the need to present themslves with beauty they just want to get the job done that does make sense. Im sensing you have read the books. I havent so i didnt know this, however for the game i like it.

PAINTING THE HORSES CLOAKS?? pl help with ideas.

If you're looking for a challenge and to develop the sense of a wealthy and powerful Royal Guard, you could emblazon each of the tabards with the Rohan emblem. Or if you're looking for a balance between the two you could go for a simple green with a nice red or gold trim.

Hmmm the second option sounds simmilar to somthing i was thinking of which is probably what ill go for. the other option; do you mean like painting a rohan emblem like a horses head or somthing? That does sound interesting but i dont think i have the skills nor patients for such a task, i think about it,

Seems like a very good idea, but the nose guard and neck piece of the horse look a bit odd if you look at the nordic equipment of the rohirrim.
So, if you convert that to some rohirim/viking/saxon style piece of armour, it will look very well.

Looking forward to seeing what you'll do.

Nice idea, I really like them.
In terms of painting I'd stick with a more traditional scheme as some have mentioned; green with red trim and gold for the armoured parts.
Some gold patterning around the place might help distinguish the horse's green areas from the rider's cloak too.

I like the idea alot! I have this obsession with red and white cloth but that's me. Not so sure how well that would fit in with Rohan.
The green with red or gold trim sounds like a great idea though.

Thanks all so far for the tips its very helpful.

I think i will paint the neck plate armour(horse's) like a brown to indicate leather being more appropiate for rohan. as for the swan detail I will stanley knife those off. The swans arms/wings on the side of the head armour i think i will paint with silver and gold just like the Royal knights helmet.

Do you guys think that if i paint the royal guards cloak the normal green then paint the horses barding green with some gold and red details it would be too much green? thats what im concerned about?

One of the main reason why I thought this might be a good idea was becasue i have always had trouple with metal riders on some of the rohan horses. especially the horses leaping up and forwards with only on foot on the base. after a while the weight of the model on that unstable plastic horse sculpt weakness the leg and the plastic goes white. we should all know that we dont wont our plastics going white as it indicates stress and weakness in the model. It makes it worse if the model is painted glued vanished etc.

I'dd personally paint the inner side of the rider's cloak red to add some life to all that green, but that's just me.

Looks good but I'd paint the armour to be more wooden or leather with golden trimmings.

And if you go with red perhaps make it sort of brownish-red. It might involve mixing though, haha :-D

If you're game, maybe add gold trim to the bottom of the barding, like a single line of burnished gold. Not sure, might be too much effort..

I refuse to do any mixing on models unless its a painting comp or a special character
