whafrog has a theory about elites armed with spears/pikes. I'll let him explain it. :)

In my opinion yes as you can essentially get them to support a shield armed WoMT then when he eventually dies get the Citadel Guard to charge in, bringing his better power and ability to the fore. Really if you are low on bow counts fill them up with Citadel Guard i would say and leave the spears for if you have the points.

It's not my theory, I was just repeating something more experienced people (hithero, etc) have mentioned: that putting the newbs in front supported by vets in back has been used in organized armies since before Rome. In game terms, the guy in front gains the benefit of having support, so the odds of his winning are better. As you lose front guys, the enemy has to deal with the vets behind, so the odds of winning retain some consistency. If you do it the other way, not only are your vets more vulnerable to bow fire, once they're gone your army falls apart faster.

so if a citidel guard was to fight through say a warrior of minas tirith, it keeps its fight value?

Might be some confusion there. If the CG is supporting a WoMT, then the WoMT uses its own Fight value and only gains the extra die for support. The CG Fight value only comes into play if it's directly involved in the combat (base contact with an enemy model). You may have been saying the same thing but it wasn't completely clear.

Nobody can "fight through", they can only provide support. Check up on the spear support rules...

great idea, as S2 bows need to roll a 6 against D5 and D6, so putting D5 as arrow fodder makes sense. But what about D4? Wouldn't they fall significantly faster against S2 bows? I love peeling away those D6 frontline Uruks with my Elven bows, leaving that tender Orc spear center... But you wouldn't put the D4 Orcs in front? That's 'human shield' tactics---what I heard the Iranians did against Iraq machine guns, driving swarms of unarmed 'soldiers' at them, trying to overwelm. Sounds costly. :o

I imagine you have to judge that case by case. The thread is about Citadel Guard having spears. Presumably they'd be supporting WoMT. Both are D6, so giving CG spears and putting them in the back works fine in this case.
