@General Elessar: Nice one, I think he actually looks very like Hugo Weaving, more so than other Elrond's I've seen. good stuff.

@Chris: I like the colours you've chosen for the cloth, the brown on the front and is that purple on his robe ? its just a tad bit dark to see clearly enough, nice basing too, a strong start to your first painting challenge 8)

@D.M.S: Outstanding!. Is that NMM on his shin guards ? looks like it, looks very impressive. Is that free hand on the bottom of his cloak or is it on the mini?, excellent painting and astonishing attention to the base, its savage!.

Well, I went back over the robe and touched his hair up with more highlights and shading, also done the eye brows which has made a considerable difference and finally darkened some of the armour above the scale mail with a little Brown Ink.

Bizarre, its amazing how much of a difference the eyebrows make to the face I agree. Outstanding job. I'm tempted to have a go at this miniature next.
The elven script on the bottom of Glorfindels cloak is freehanded on, theres a translation in my WIP thread. Thanks for your comments.

DMS, Yeah the eyebrows have really tidied the face up, I'm glad I was given the incentive to go back touch him up. Savage stuff though on the free hand, masterfully done, I've yet to attempt it.

Chris, The purple works really well, its different. Your camera looks more than capable of taking a good picture. The light seems to be focused on the left hand side of the miniature and your photographs are focusing on the partially shaded areas in the middle and right, this is perhaps causing it to look a little dark.
If you could get good lighting on the side of the miniature your photographing, I doubt you'll need a new camera....you could buy more mini's instead then.

Wow - the entries are coming in thick and fast. Chris - great job for your first challenge. The purple on the cloak looks nicely done. Maybe take some pics outside in the sunlight so we can see the details better. Also, maybe try a different background. A light background is OK, but pure white might result in the model appearing darker if the camera compensates for the light reflecting off a white background.
BW - the little touches have really improved things - but I thought it was a fantastic paint job anyway.
DMS - wow, wow, wow!!!!! The white horse is amazing - but so is the rest of the model. Would you be able to tell us how you did the freehand on the bottom of the cloak? That probably sounds like a stupid question, but I don't really know where to start with freehand. I imagine you would have to plan things out a bit?

The freehand on the cloak - all i did is write the sentence down in elvish on a piece of paper and then copy it onto the cloak.. I didn't plan it as well as I might have done tho... see my WIP thread :)

Sorry Bizzare - didn't see that question ... yes I've been trying out NMM a little.. I tried painting the sword using NMM too but couldn't get it to a point I was happy with it.. the only metallic paint on Glorfindel is the gold and the sword, the arm pads and shin pads are NMM

I will try painting NMM swords again sometime in the future but struggle to see where the highlights would be... Do you think you need an eye for it or is it something that comes with practice?

I had the same happen to me when I tried NMM swords too but what you've done so far I think is very effective, like you have the NMM right next to grey cloth and it still stands out as a metallic so your definitely doing something right.

A lot does come with practice it seems. The more you practice anything the more unconscious the act becomes, your hand, eye and mind are recognising the patterns of painting and adapting to become more efficient at it by working together to reach the standard your eye has set or seen. That's why I'd say you repainted the sword, your eye wasn't pleased at all.

I'm just wondering what you mean by 'need an eye' ? do you mean something to do with looking at other painting or when painting yourself ?

When I say "need an eye" I just mean that some people can look at a sword and know instinctively where the light and dark highlights/ shading would go ... when I look at one I have absolutely no idea ... its all trial and error with me. I agree tho I think its something that will improve the more you practice it to the point where it will become instinctive.

Oh yeah, sorry, I haven't a clue about painting traditional NMM either, would need to see the NMM already done on the miniature before trying.

I'm almost finished with Gil-Galad, just have a bit more to do. I'll try and get some pics up later today. I've been experimenting with freehand a bit, and it's driving me crazy!

Nice work everyone else, looks like it'll be another good competition.

Here's my High Elf Archer Captain, just finished converting him today. His first paint job was by my younger sister almost 5 years ago so I'm going to see if I can do better now that I have some tricks up my sleeve.
