Someone once said to me u could use hairspray instead of varnish. Does this actually work? Or is varnish the better solution?

I have never heard of using hairspray in place of varnish. I would say that it does not work - hairspray is not a substitute for varnish. It's sticky/tacky, likely to attract/hold dust and at best, would only last a few days on the shelf, less if you're actually handling it. Varnish is the way to go.

Charcoal/graphite and paper are a completely different medium than acrylic paints. You can always grab a test model and give it a go though.

I tried hairspray as a cheap alternative to varnish, but it is far too sticky for my tastes. It ended up looking dusty and just...wrong. Now, I use a coat of gloss varnish for protection and another coat of matte varnish to kill the shine. It works a treat!

its not a permanent fixative, I use it for weathering tanks and vehicles, it dissolves with warm water, so will eventually come off models through constant handling.
It's basically glue in a spray, can use it to temporarily hold down flock and stuff too.
