The way I see it, if you don't care about the theme at all, then why play LotR?

Anyone can invent a fluff for their army and who's to say that they are wrong?

I dont play at all but from a model maker's point of view I shy away from reading the fluff (particularly the Matt Ward Fluff) but what you have to remember is that Tolkien never wrote a novel in view of setting up a games system and a purist would say that GW and the films only focus on the violent aspects of Tolkien's work. However, each person is different and all the fluff in the world wont replace Lord of the Rings. I dont play but I know that a lot of historical wargamers use SBG and WOTR rules and at the end of the day, the most important thing is to have fun in the hobby. End of the day it is only a game! :-D

For me it's very important to have a good theme for my army. I want to respect the works of Tolkien as most as possible, and it's better to play with an army that really existed or could have esxisted.

I agree with you, Morgoths_crown. All the games, and also the GW stuff, focus on the war aspects of Middle Earth. But indeed, it's just a game!

When I do game (which hasn't been for a long time) I don't 100% rely on my force to follow the fluff, but as long as it is possible, makes some sense and is not completely ridiculous I'm happy.

Im not that interested in the fluff. However my armies are usually quite themed
i.e. the army i usually play with is an undead army which includes, warriors of the dead, dead marches spectres, barrow wraiths, shades etc. lead by either twilgiht ringwraiths or 'the tainted'

I appreciate a themed army, and I don't mind "what if" armies as long as they are in the realm of "this was possible". What I can't stand, is a list that is built purely to win at any cost, unless it's something like 'ard boyz where "themz the roolz". I think that exploring different combinations and possibilites make the game more fun than simply adhering to an absolute "purist" list.

Theme and "fluff" is what I customize my gaming experiences for. To me, the story is more important than the game itself. Thats why I played SBG first. I wanted to wield the legendary charge of an all-mounted Rohan army (Forth Eorlingas!). I wanted to feel the power of the dwarven warmachines pounding enemy formations to dust. I enjoyed the epic struggles of Heroes dueling either other Heroes or Monsters in a bid to save the day. WOTR simply expanded the scale. Then I switched over to WHFB because I loved the idea of playing an army of Crusading Knights of Bretonnia(For the Lady and Bretonnia!). Heck, its why I became a DM for D&D. I wanted to build a world and create a truly amazing story that could at least attempt to mimic stories like Legends of Drizzt and Lord of the Rings. I enjoy the game less against non-themed forces because in my mind, it's become competitive rather than entertaining.
