I think they both have potential to be great games but WotR has much more requirements. WotR is really not fun against a bad opponent and you need loads of models, lots of playing space, etc. But SBG dosen't need a lot to be a great game. One of the best games I played was against General Elessar and his brother, 1,000 points. I had barely any models at the time and my army was literally 1/2 heroes but it was great fun. I have yet to have a truly excellent WotR game.

The Goblins versus the Elves and Grey Company?

No, that one was rubbish as you decided to take 8,000,000 gobbos. I'm talking about that one when Clement had Mordor, I had elves (tonnes of heroes as I only had one box of WotLA) and you had Haradrim and the mumak.

Actually, it was 9,000,000 Goblins. ;)

SBG - great for all the detail of Middle-earth, and can manage to create scaled down versions of major battles.
WoTR - Cecil B deMille meets Middle-earth...aye, lets have another 1000 orcs here. And why not, if it floats your boat?
So I come down on the side of SBG as the superior and more ethos-friendly rule set BUT will continue with WoTR also as it is my excuse for having The Backlog from Hell - I want to recreate the Pelennor with thousands of participants, not a few score. The same goes for everything else.. (Dorth having delusions of grandeur again, folks).
I also understand that my pockets are relatively deep compared to most people (working full-time and not having any significant vices like alcohol...), so SBG is the more accessible to everyone and thus deserves credit for that.
So, 9/10 for SBG and maybe 6.5/10 for WotR, overall.
