I have a lot to go. I am not sure of the wash. Should I try a dark blue wash or go with a dark brown wash? The eyes will be dark blue. The mouth parts a metallic green.

The bases are about done. I would add grass but they are to be in a cavern. Suggestions will be welcome.

I would use a mix of the two. I would probably give it a heavy wash with dark blue, maybe with a little orange added, and then depending on how it looked add a wash of brown. You'll just have to try it and keep going until it looks good to you.
Nice choice of colour scheme. I agree with the idea of not putting grass on the bases but you may want to add a green wash to parts of the base to represent moss like TheBucklandBrewer did in his article on painting bat swarms.

I worked out the movement trays. I am happy with them. Of course your input is welcome.


The dark blue wash worked well on the larger black spider. I am going to add some more high lights when the wash is dry. The smaller black spider I am going to try a blue high light on the leg joints.



The small yellow spider , I think I am going to leave like it is. I will paint the eyes. I still need to practice with the metallic green eyes.
I do not have 12 of any one kind of spider so I will mix them on the movement trays for now.

I still have to work out how I am going to make movement trays for the bats and wolves. Suggestions are welcome.

The little yellow spiders look very good. Could you share how you painted them?
The larger spider doesn't look too blue, but I would make the eyes a little darker. However I would say that the fangs are too white. They stick out a little too much and look too flat. If you want them to be a lighter colour have a look at what simmuskhan did with the talons on his balrog on his blog, though I would personally make them a darker as the rest of the spider is a lot darker.

The idea for such a movement trays I like - whether it is for WotR?
Personally, I drew a bit more contrasting colors. A red or yellow - that stand out on the base. Rocks are great - but a whole it's better to be judged if the pictures were a bit better.

For me the larger spider could do with being more blue, or rather a light highlight.
A very light blue ie Regal Blue mixed with Fortress Grey applied on the highest points will bring more depth to the otherwise well painted figure.
I am talking no more than 1mm wide.
Once this is done you may find a mid tone highlight on the slightly lower points and some Badab Black in the deepest recesses will create a further illusion of depth.
This may sound a lot but you are nearly there and a few touches here and there could make the difference.

I did not work on the spiders this week I have been trying to get the
AC fixed. It worked for about 5 minutes and went out again. I worked out side some. It was too hot in the house.



I painted some but its to boring to post. Only so many gray rocks you can look at. I made the rocky one inch to two inch road and a a rocky two inch to two inch road. I worked on some 0 to one inch sections as well. I am still looking for a good fallen tree.

The rocks look very good. The mix of brown of grey looks very realistic.

The rocks are made from pine bark from a tree that was struck by lighting.I picked the bark up when I was gathering fresh lichen at my brother's property near Stone Mountain Ga. I cut the pieces in half on the table saw. I used wood glue to mount the bark on a medium density fiber board.The road sections were cut from scrap hard board. They will form the base for the same road sections I cast for the Mushroom Tree. I have not filled the gaps or painted the bark yet. It looks natural because it is the natural color. I am looking for a suitable piece of honeysuckle or wild grape vine for the fallen tree you suggested. I have a few small stones for the rock the Giants threw. I really liked that suggestion. If I can find a good enough vine I am going to make a King Kong tree bridge as well.

I think I am going to paint the spider's fangs black like in some of the photos of the spiders in your spider post. I put together and primed my GW Spider Queen. I am not sure I know what to do with that myself.

Although I intended the road pieces for the road through the Misty Mountains they will make a good approach to Shelob's Lair . The road to Cirith Ungol

I will make more rapid progress now that I have decided the best way for me to build the main elements.

I am not going to use the expanding foam for any more pieces. It is to flexible. I have not used it or even finished detailing it and I have spent more time making repairs than I spent building it.

Overall I was pleased with how it looks. there are more photos in the album if you click on the thumb nail.

I will hive to make 12 castings with the road mold to finish this section. I want to finish the spiders as well.

I need to creates some elements to add some color. Fires, tents, orc nest?, I am not sure so some suggestions will be helpful

How about some small clumps of moss to bring in a touch of colour and also some green and brown washes at the base of the rock elements to depict where running water has been ?

If you did some fires you could be really brave and add some glow to the rock surfaces will a series of thin yellow / orange glazes !

I had been resisting the idea because I was thinking it was under ground. No light no green. I am gradually coming to the realization I need the green for it to "look right".There would be no sound in a space battle but it would be boring with out it.


I am going to use battery powered tea candles but the glazes will enhance the effect.
