Can a banner bearer use the banner bonus himself? And does it make sense to upgrade 1 out of 6 mounted warriors with a banner? For example morgul-knigts or the galadhrim ones?

okay i've always played that they can use the effect themselves, using the argument that they have the pride of carrying it

Personally i don't use a banner for my cavalry, the bases are too big in my opinion, you can't fit many models in range of it

I think it all depends on personal outlook.. if think the banner will help the cavalry more than buying extra cavalry/other troops with the points a banner costs then by all means take the banner.
In my opinion it isnt worth it for cavalry as the base is too big (as has already been said), and in many occasions the cavalry may not be in the same area as the rest of your force, reducing it's effect.

As for the Banner rule question, I can't find anything specific about it but I would say the Banner Bearer can benefit because his fight is in range of one of his sides banners, I'm not totally sure though.
