A mythical beast that lurks beneath the waters and only comes to the surface once in a blue moon?

I guess it must be Nessy.

I've done a bit more work. After adding a ridge of putty along the spine, I put the first four spines on his neck last night and sculpted a few scales. :D

Clearer, brighter photos for the ocularly challenged!

Yeah whatever Dorthonion

I just wanted to mention that it looks just amazing. Are you planning to paint or will you leave it in green? :P Can't think of a way of painting that contributes to this amazing sculpt!

:D

That is Green Stuff.

I'm glad you like it as it is but I'm definitely going to paint it when it's finished and it'll look a zillion times better. You like it now... You'll like it better then, methinks.

P.S. Has anyone seen Robbie Burns of late?

So I'm curious, I see the black dots so I know you are still counting scales... but how are you handling the removed scales. Do those stay added to the total or get subtracted off the total?? Hmmm???

 Erm... I guess I'll just keep the total the same and say that however many I've removed, I will have replaced! I'm not going to start counting again to make sure. I'm bound to have made an error in counting somewhere anyway, so the final figure will probably be rounded to the nearest fifty or hundred.

I don't know how many I removed so I'll leave it at that. There are limits, even to my obsessions! The final number of scales sculpted will have an accuracy margin of about 50 scales. Some people are just so hard to please!

Sorry for my 'sarcastic' Nessy comment, all I have to say in truth is...

Smaug the Magnificent :?:

Magnificent he is NOT :!:

He is ...

MEMBERS HELP: whats a better word than Magnificent :?:

I only have one critisism (I may have said this before, cant be bothered to look at back posts), I honestly think you are doing a fantastic job on him, but for me (and I admit I say this because I have a Forgeworld Fire Dragon sitting right in front of me and it really influences my oppinion)...
That I would have made those spinal spines a lot longer to make him more :?: intimidating :?:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer/dragon/dragonp1a.jpg

However, I know this thing is going to look freakin awesome when its done !!!

:D You did say that before, Brian. I know you like the idea of longer spines. On some dragons that looks fine, but there's a balance I'm keeping between the size of the spines on his spine and those which line each side of his belly.

Here's a pic just to show I am actually doing some work on him at the moment - and I'm not counting these scales!

This shows the ridge a bit better.

Image

Compared that with how it did look without the ridge.

Image

Don't tell me it looked better before, I might have to set Dorth on you.

Ignore the grumpy old sot Nathan, he's just jealous because you're going to finish your dragon before he can finish painting his!

I love this project and have felt inspired to start sculpting stuff myself because of the likes of yourself, UKFreddyBear, and BizarreWarstar.

:D

Go for it, Alan. It's not as difficult as some might wish you to believe... But some people certainly have more natural ability than others and perhaps are willing to take more risks.

Now you've had the experience of sculpting your tree for Bag End you might want to have a go at an Ent. Being so organic in nature, they are very forgiving subjects for a 'creature' sculpting project.

I don't know about getting Smaug finished before Brian finishes painting his dragon as I'm working in fits and starts on this one. After a couple of week's sculpting on this, I've had enough and put it back on the shelf. Who knows? Maybe one day, I'll be able to paint my dragon!

P.S. How long has he been painting that dragon? I've a feeling it's got to be well over a year, now. It was looking great the last time I saw a picture.

My thoughts exactly.

Now, how long has Brian been working on that dragon? Well, he got it as payment for painting minis for Battle Games by Mail about 3 years ago (maybe even 4). So I guess that long, say 3 and a half years. So you're still on track to finish yours first.
