I would have a range of reddish/gold metallics shading from near white to dull red. It would be like hot metal - Smaug the Golden!

I like the sound of that, Dorth. :D Thanks.

Alright, I know it's starting to look like a weird swan... That'll change.

Image

The wing wires had to come off. I'll need to do a lot of detailed sculpting and they'll just get in the way.

Image

I've left good long stalks of the wing wires to help with joining the wings to the body later on.

Good overall shape so far. I think the proportions are just right. Keep going!

This is shaping up (sorry for the pun) to be a fabulous model Nathan. I like the bulky outline of the dragon as it stands at the moment, very plausible skeletal structure.

Will watch this one with great interest.

Wowies, very nice natarn. Looks absolutely brilliant. I was thinking that it looked along the lines of a dinosaur as opposed to a swan - so it looks like your heading in the right direction
I really love that rather haughty pose you've given it - adds loads of character!

I certainly have been influenced by dinosaurs. Part of my prep was to look at lots of illustrations of dinosaurs as well as dragons. The dinosaur images are based on real creatures so give me a better idea of what a realistic dragon might look like. Of course a dragon is a fantasy creature - but I want it to look as credible as possible. Perhaps this animal could have lived on earth (not just Middle Earth).

Image

This is a baryonyx illustration. The hind legs I've made are similar, as the forelegs will be. The dragon neck, I've made thicker as it joins the chest to support its length and give it what I feel is a more appropriate profile for a dragon.

I am so glad you like the pose. I was conscious that I wanted to avoid anything static or heavy-feeling, as it is so easy to do with models like this. His body has a great snake-like twist, from the head, all the way to the tail (this has to be seen from above, really). His front right claw is raised menacingly - and could be made to hold the limp body of a foolish warrior who got too close!

I like the realistic musculature - it makes the whole thing so much more credible and looks fabulous.

Please Sir, I want some more, Sir!

So far so good! I'm interested in seeing what sort of skin texture you opt for.
