wow

Firstly your painting is beautiful, Galadriel is simply lovely as are the others.

Secondly, i like the way you base them. It is a very realistic look but isn't over the top. A lot of people do what i call display pieces, ie they look good on the shelf but are too showy for the gaming table. Your balance is spot on and these figures would look fantastic in either place.

Wonderful work MMS.

I've been busy:

These aren't the most accomplished miniatures I've painted; I've been working on a more effective style that relies on good colour selection to help me get through my ever growing backlog of unpainted stuff.

AWESOME! Probably some of the best paintjobs I've seen on one-ring so far!
Celeborn's face looks so very life-like! Hard to believe that this is a 28mm mini!
He looks a bit chubby, but that's due to the model, not your work :P
Gandalf and Saruman are just breathtaking as well!

Could you maybe give a tutorial for how you painted the faces?

yes a face painting tutorial is in the works. part of my motivation for simplifying the process is to make tutorials. up till now my style was far too messy to explain or. recommend to anyone. but now it's more streamlined and will be much easier to write. whilst there's a lot technique and practice required for judging things. like paint consistency and colour selection the process at least for me seems stupidly simple.

Okay this is the short version for now:

I start of with a layer of a dark reddish brown, specifically dark flesh (vallejo game colour), but any variation of a dark red or brown should work and you want to tailor this to your desired result.

This is then probably the best time to paint the eyes using whatever technique you prefer.

The next layer is quite a pale skin tone - midlund flesh (p3). You want to cover all of the dark flesh apart from the lower lip and a thin line around the eyes and hair. The trick here is to get the consistency right so that it's covering but not too thick to be completely opaque. Once dry it should look darker than if you had painted the pale skin straight onto a white undercoat.

I then apply a very dilute glaze of dark flesh followed by another layer of pale skin. This is optional depending on the colour of the previous layers.

For the highlights and shading I mix my skin tone with pastel blue - frostbite (p3) - and split this into two pools. I add a little white for the highlight and some dark flesh for the shading. These are thinned slightly.

The highlights are concentrated on the brow, bridge of the nose and nostrils, upper lip, chin and cheekbones.

The shading is along the sides of the nose, sides of the face and lower jaw.

To finish I apply a small highlight of the skin tone to the lip.

And that's it. This is quite a low contrast method that is suitable for pale or smooth skin. But you can add further glazes of shade and highlight to enhance the contrast if you prefer.

I love the natural and muted style your painting has, I really like Gandalf but all three are top notch.

An interesting palette of muted colours that work wonderfully well. As for your painting standard, well its gone through the roof !!!

Hi guys

I've had a big push towards getting all of my hobbit stuff done before the new film comes out. This meant accepting a lower standard than usual. In fact the dwarfs are little more than a basecoat and wash. I tried to be as neat as possible so that I can always return to them later. Not brilliant, but I think they look okay and definitely better than grey plastic. All that is left from efgt is half of the goblins, Radagast, the scenery and poor Ori whose hand is missing.

The OSL on Gandalfs cloak is superb. Magnificent work.
I agree with you that the majority are very neat but need more. Hopefully you will get the chance to visit them again and get to the standard we are quickly becoming accustomed to.
