Which Cavalry is the best to ally in with a Dwarf Army? Trying to think which is the best from Gondor Rohan or Elves.

They´re not useless, it´s just the Khazads are a LOT better for the same points. If you play competively, go Khazads all the way. If not, you can take some of both, but be prepared for the Irons to perform a lot less then the Khazads.

No they are far too expemsive for allies. Shieldless KoMT are the best for you.

Why do you say shieldless isn't the extra def worth it for 5 points?

Rohirrmim are way too overcosted/underpowered, not worth 30pts, they need lances. KoMT are much better.

DocDeath, no, the shields should cost 2.5pts per company since they only give +1 defence, not +2, yes defence 6 is better, but they are not as economical, and if they used as allies for a high point army such as Elves or Dwarves, you need them economical and cheap, therefore no shields.

The 2 extra attck doesn't matter that much compared to their high pts cost and stats, they are even worse value than SKoDA, as they have lower strength, no lances and low defence.

I agree with gothmogthewerewolf, KoMT are cheap and have lances, which helps when hitting, with the shield if you have 5 points per company spare for the +1 defence, then go for it, but dwarves are tough and expensive so you will be needing the extra points!

What would be a good Dwarf army at 1200 points to play against my friend DocDeath and his Gondor army? I'm trying to figure out which epics to use and still have a decent army with the points left. Also wondering what allies to bring in? Maybe a magic caster?

Off the top of my head, and without personal experience on dwarves:

Gimli 175
Balin 100

Dwarf Warriors - 4 coy, shields - 160
Dwarf Warriors - 4 coy, shields - 160
Dwarf Rangers - 3 coy, bows - 120

Khazad Guard - 4 coy - 200
Dwarf Ballista - 1 coy - 60
Dwarf Ballista - 1 coy - 60

Knights of Minas Tirith - 3 coy, shields - 90
Knights of Minas Tirith - 3 coy - 75

1200 on the dot.

Feel free to comment and improve.

Drop the KoMT shields and the Rangers and swap one block of Dwarves for 6 comps with two-handers.

You need some archers, aka the Rangers. If you don't have them, you'll have to go across the board at 5" a turn through a hail of arrows. With them, you can give as good as you get. The KOMT have shields because I had 15 pts left.

Dwarves are defence 8, they do not get peppered, and they already have ballistas, they don't need both until reaching around 2,000pts as both archers and artillery fulfill the same function, particularly at that point level. With KoMT it is an idea, but worthless if your enemy has more strength 4 than 3, you could use a hornblower for someone. Though either could work.

Then maybe your advice makes sense, but don't you have enough hard hitters already? Gondor has S3 throughout, so the shields are better then a hornblower in one unit (which you won't use, because then the one unit gets too far ahead and gets flanked).

You don't use the extra movement to go further ahead, you keep it in line with the others, and use the extra move to make it more manouevreable. Dwarves are all about heavy hitters, they generally need to in a war of attrition as there isn't that much else. SKoDA are strength 4, and some people, for some strange reason do use them, but the shields could work against them, because they are themselves. As I said, make cheap cavalry slightly less vulnerable but less cheap, or make one tough slow unit more manoevreable.

I play Dwarves aswell.. Just joined the site..

My oppinion is that you dont really need allies except for mage(s). I normally play against elves so i do use Vault Warden. these are like my middle line. they scare peeps off with there pikes and high stats. i cover there flank on one site with kings champion and rangers with bow, if that doesnt seem to work focus some ballista fire on it then u be fine.. other flank covered with block of dwarf warriors with shield. and then i got like some rangers, a block of Khazad Guard and a 2th Kings champion left. the khazad with dain and epic strike + rampage is sick.. kills all the low def elves in no time..

And why no ally horses? You can say i count my Kings Champions as ''horses''. they are very usefull to flank enemies cause of there small base.

floi is usefull against the elves for removing the terror ability.

havnt really got a list that i always use cause i love to have some changes in the game.. just keep in mind that you have def 7-8 so u can take a lot of punches.. high str + nice fight (not gd enough vs elves though).

Saw u wanted to use the Irons Guards, i played with them only several times ,cause they indeed not as good as khazad guards, to guard flanks.. worked out pretty good

i just hold my line and then slay my enemy.. i think there isnt really need for tactics when u play with dwarves hehe..

We just recently got back into WoTR. Our friends opt'd to give Warmaster a break, so we dusted off our dwarves/moria armies.

I like the ballista's better than archers for under 2000pts. Just cause. As for the use of I.G.'s, I use them to shield the ballista's from charges, or send them out to attack the flanks and draw attention off the main blocks.

For allies I always take Radagast and occasionally take 1 unit of 3 companies of KoMT. Again, I use the KoMT to worry the flanks of the opponent and not rely on them to be a hammer or a pivotal force to win the game.
