Whats the best way to play a Dragon? I'm thinking of adding one to my MM army.

Scaring your opponent. Dragons can act like a giant arrow magnet and usually survive several volleys of archer fire, allowing your not-so-armoured formations to get across the battlefield unmolested. Also a good counter against calvary, heavy or light, as dragon-fire will slay more than a few and the cavalry with be hard-pressed to bypass your Defence and EHtK table.

Take the magic upgrade. It's totally worth it.

Other than that, a dragon can do just about anything. They are fast enough to be a reserve, rapid reaction force, tough enough to spearhead a first wave. strong enough to break an anvil formation.

Just keep them away from anything that can cause automatic hits. My dragon has been getting shredded lately from multiple Strength from Corruptions a turn and if he is in range of Khamul you may have a problem. Bouncing a dozen hits into a dragon can be a game winner for your opponent.

What size army, points wise would you recommend playing a Dragon? Or what's a too low number of points to play a dragon?

I agree that if you're going to get the Dragon, get the magic upgrade! 8) With it the Dragon is as effective, or possibly even more so, than the Balrog and each can really be a solid hammer in a MM army. I've faced off against the Balrog more often but I think the Dragon has more flexibility personally and would be my choice of the two.

Considering how affordable the base troops for Goblins are, and that there are really only two (again, affordable) Epic options for the force, you could probably play a Dragon at 1200 points and above. The presence of the Dragon will probably draw attention away from any Cave Trolls you may have, allowing you to get them into the mix easier without being killed early.

Only get a Dragon if you're going to play at 1,500pts or more, any less and you may not survive. Or as Beowulf says yopu could squeeze it into 1,200pts for a rematch with whatsisname, its denfence is higher than the giant's so will be harder to kill, and it has extra tiips as mentioned above. If you do use the dragon, droop both the giant and the waith (neither did well for you last time anyway) good luck again in teh future 8)

I won't play a dragon (or a Balrog) at less than 2000 points unless I have to. Taking up more than a quarter of my army with a single model just seems wrong to me.

Which is completely wrong. Only the original dragons like Glaurung and Anglacon were supposed to be able to outmatch a Balrog. If the upgrade was 100pts instead of 75, it would be a bit better, but it still should not be as good/better than Durin's Bane.

I don't think there were many times where a Balrog and a Dragon were ever compared. I don't know where you came up with only the original dragons could outmatch a Balrog. In any case a dragon is, IMO, just as worthy a foe as a Balrog and should be just as good.

Talking purely in relation to game mechanics as two powerful options in the same army list, not trying to relate them in the setting of Middle Earth.

No, not in WOTR, Sauron is much easier to kill than the Balrog. And I mean really. A LOT EASIER!

Isn't he just VH2K? Legolas and Thranduil together and he can be gone in one turn.

Yes, you don't even need them, just one decent sized formation or archers with a hero could do it.

Well, seeing as that's what the source material is, I am relating them to middle-earth. All I'm saying is make the dragon the same price as the Durins Bane (and maybe give Durins Bane a fiery lash style attack) and then they will be about even in terms of the game and LotR.

Aww i have sauron and was thinking off starting my new army as mordor :(. YOU'VE ALL PUT ME OFF!. na lol its kool made my desicon easier :) but remember sauron has a superior magical knowlege. Mastery 5 know 15 powers from ruin dismay and darkness both the dragon( with the upgrade of course) and balrog are mastery 3 and know the speels from ruin. so even though physicaly the dragon and balrog are better sauron takes the fist place for magic .

on the dragon and balrog debate. i would go dragon. i like the model better for starters. secondly the dragon has a shooting attack which the balrog does not. other than that they have the same special rules same courage same might points same res same attacks same magic.

the balrog does have higher fight and strength, but then the dragon has better move of 12 and a defence of 8. lets not forget that the dragon is a flying monster so +6 dice on the charge which the balrog only recives plus 1. i would go dragon with the magic upgrade everytime.

Durin's Bane is another name for the Balrog of Moria.
