I'm sure this has been done before but I do think it'd be awesome to paint up 32 models as chess peices. I won't have the time to start on this project which at the moment is just an idea. Not sure I'll have the $. I think I would paint a Uruk-Hai army predominantly black, with splashes of silver of course. The hardest part IMO would be matching models (two warg riders for knights is easy but 8 VERY similar pawns not so much.)

List Draft
Rooks- Banner Bearers
Knights- Warg Riders
Bishops- maybe xbows? Beserkers?
Pawns- Pikes? Or xbows?
King- I would think Saurumon but his overall white scheme would clash. It would also make sense as Saurumon is fragile just like the king. Any suggestions here would be nice.
Queen- Grima Wormtongue. This seems perfect to me as he slithers easily through his enemy and is able to go all over the map/board.

I think this could be a place for any discussion and/or WIP photos of LotR miniatures used as chess pieces.

You could distinguish between sets by base rim colour (black and white) therefore allowing Saruman to be the King.
Warg Riders would take up a larger space than other models so I wouldn't recommend them as knights.

How about?:

Rooks: Uruk Banner Bearers 1 and 2 from original command group blisters.
Knights: Uruk-Hai Berserkers (or Captains?)
Bishops: Uruk-Hai Shamans
Pawns: Fighting Uruk-Hai w/sword and shield (or Scouts w/sword and shield)

There are so many combinations you could have, and pawns don't need to all look the same as long as they can be distinguished from the other pieces. I have an official LOTR Chess set with various different Orc (archer, drummer etc.) as pawns for one team whilst the pawns for the good side are Hobbits, Warriors of Minas Tirith, Faramir, Eowyn...

It's an interesting idea but there would be no right or wrong way of going about it, as you really could do it any way you want to.

Ah I was under the impression that the Warg riders were on the same size bases.

Your list does look very good though! Beardless for Knights sounds solid though I think I would keep crossbows for bishops...the shaman concept never appealed to me.

Beardless?

Fair enough. You could even have Lurtz and Ugluk as knights (my chess set has Shagrat and another Mordor Uruk-Hai as knights).

Haha, I've been thinking up a chess set for the longest time for my minis, mine would just be good versus evil:

Good/Evil
Pawns: WoMT/Morannon Orcs
Rooks: Boromir, Faramir/ Lurtz, Gothmog
Knights: Theoden, Eomer/ Rignwraiths
Bishops: Elrond, Gandalf/ Mouth of Sauron, Saruman
Queen: Arwyn/ Witchking
King: Aragorn/ Sauron

Never got around to doing this yet though.

It's quite a good idea actually, a chess set made with miniatures painted up by yourself. I might add it to the list of projects I want to do, even though it'd be a while before anything got done.

It'd still be on the list so it'd have to get done eventually! ;)

It's for sure been placed on my list, beneath a few project of course. Once I finish my WoMT, finish the fellowship, and help my sister paint up her WoR I shold have no backlog resulting in quite a celebration and a good reward. :-D

Oh and my troll of course but that will be finished in a couple weeks.

This would be awesome but I doubt I have the time or money...

Something like this will be in the works following the completion of the pieces though!

Dont know if you clicked the link but Mr. Bruce Hirst has provided full, detailed instructions for the above chess board using his blocks. I'm a huge fan of his! Brilliant molds.

Sure did. I've seen the moulds used many times by various people on here and I just love the results.

^This is exactly what I've been going through thinking about a chess set the past 3 or 4 years. Not only that, they're only a few people I play chess with and out of those few only two would get the Lotr theme of which characters fits which pieces.

This is what I have done so far: Green = done, Red = W.I.P.
Good/Evil
Pawns: WoMT/Morannon Orcs
Rooks: Boromir, Faramir/ Lurtz, Gothmog
Knights: Theoden, Eomer/ Rignwraiths
Bishops: Elrond, Gandalf/ Mouth of Sauron, Saruman
Queen: Arwyn/ Witchking
King: Aragorn/ Sauron

You know what also would be nice but I'll never get around doing until I have nothing else left to do; a custom made board where the black squares have "The Eye" and the white squares have "The White Tree", and for the algebraic side characters it will be Dwarven & Elvish characters in place of the alphabet & numeric digits.
