Yeh sorry for the blurry pics, they are quite bad. Ty for the comment as well, I still need to rebase the uruk to the grassy scheme instead of the snowy one. Thanks again.

The rocks look good you might want to glue on some sand. The hill on the right was made by Howard Whitehouse he likes to use a lot of sand. I made the gray mine hill. I used a little less.
If you use a bread knife to shape the bottoms flat you will not have to make a base for some of your rocks. :idea:

Thanks for the tips Willow, those are both great looking rocks. I might make another one to try it out without a base.

First half of the board was constructed today:

And my WIP river made out of foamboard (ignore the blue foam i scraped the idea of hills because i do not have enough and im getting gaming hills for Christmas):

And the base of the rocks has been given a brown undercoat:

And another question, I am going to put GW water effects on the river but what colour should i paint underneath? and if anyone has experience with them how do you make it look like it is flowing and not stagnant?

A flowing river - well , i think i just putted a layer of blue on it; and then drybrushed with white and other blues. In lines following the flow of the river.
It gave me this.

U can also use other colours if u don't like blue

For a river you could also carve it out using a router on a thick foamboard sheet. It's actually probably cheaper than wood, lighter and is still pretty strong. You can also carve dips in it & add hills etc..

O ye, just tought back of my sea-base. U can do it with acrylic paints. Use think layers - gives some volume. And over that i did some plastic glue to get a water like effect.

No blue

The problem is that river have a difefrent colour on different points on the day. Because rivers have no colour. If it is a rainy day and the sky is grey the rivers looks dark and not blue but if the sky is blue and sunny the river looks blue. So think hard what you want to do but most time grey looks better then blue cause blue looks unrealistic if not painted very well.

Mixing black green and blue has given me realistic results in the past.

You can actually mix paint into the GW water effects.

Thanks to everyone for your great replies. In the end I am going to go for Elros' tip about mixing water effects and paint but all your other tips are great and useful as well.

I will probably mix a blue-green colour and either paint it on the river and put the WE on top or mix it, ill have to test it. But that is a very long time away.

@Drum: I still need to pick up some styrofoam but im happy with my foamboard one at the moment.

And some more painting has been done on the rangers:

These guys are finished apart from basing (the black and the light brown haven't been highlighted because I have not got the paints for it yet- picking them up after christmas.
Only 7 more to go :-D

Im getting better at highlighting IMO but I still have a long way to go.

Well my rangers are finished after around 5 hours painting today:

You can expect some work on a citedal gaming hill and eomer soon as I got them for Christmas.
Anyway I'm off to thing of this years resolution

I like your rangers, the red seems to fit them very well, hopefully their enemies won't notice them with the bright colour

@Eothen: The rangers don't need camouflage because no enemy survives long enough to see them :lol:

As for the board, it is just going to be your average grassy plain style one but it will be fun doing it. :-D

@JCoo; Those water effects look amazing but the price is a worry, because I live in scotland the price including shipping is $56.09 which is £36. So i think it is sort of balanced with the GW stuff. But the results do look very good and if i lived in the US i would definitely use the woodland senics products. But thanks for the idea.

That looks much better value. But which would I get out of the realistic water or the water effects, because the WE but is used for fast flowing rivers, but could I just apply it on smooth and not texture it so it would look slower flowing? I'm glad you introduced me to these products because I think I'll buy from other places rather than GW now.

Water effect is like a toothpaste so its hard to make very smooth surface BUT with a little effort i think that you could make it look like a "slow" river.

I usually use Realistic water to make big areas of water witch are still and then use Water effect to add waves and stuff.

I'll go for the realistic water then. I won't be using it for a while though because I still have to paint and texture the board first. The river can just be a slow tributary on the Entwash or something like that.

Well I will post some progress up today sometime, because I am painting my board today and hopefully adding sand and stuff. I will also post pics of Eomer and the elf because a little work has been done to them.

But I have changed my mind about the water effects, I'm going for the GW. My reasons are: The GW costs £15.50 for 237ml and the Ec Senics one costs £17.60 and contains 236.5ml (and it's out of stock) plus shipping which is £3.10 so that is about £20.70 in total so all in all I think the GW stuff is the better option.

On the board the bridge has also been raised up onto a little cliff bit so it looks better.

But expect some progress today.
