We had an argument about this a few months ago; we came to the conclusion that they don't.

It's very clear in the rules that they are not cavalry without the rider. Still, don't get discouraged. Instead, just compare them to an Orc. For about the same cost you get that speed and higher Strength. They can be very effective in a group even without the extra Knock Down.

I don't think it's very clear, if it was people wouldn't be asking about it. Oh well, at least it's clearer than WotR...

Oh it's clear, it's just an example of the triumph of hope over reality :) but it's also a matter of getting used to the precision of GW's wording. "Cavalry" is a mount and a rider...no rider, no cavalry, no bonus.

Oo I remeber having this argument on another thread.... and the fact that Gwalihir isnt a monstrous mount. But I found out a while ago that the rule book says Gwalihir is and isnt a monstrous mount but i couldnt find the thread that we had the argument in to say what i had found so yeah.. I might as well say it no lol.

The rule book says

"Some mounts are so large and powerful that they can smash through other cavalry with ease, bowling to the ground riders and mounts as if they were foot soldiers. Mounts with a strength of 6 or higher are classed as monstrous mounts" Pg 51

Ok Gwalihir does have 6 strength.. But he doesnt have a rider so he isnt a monstrous mount or a mount because no one can ride him. Then i found this in the Mumikil section.

"If the rider is killed, but the mount isn't, the animal runs away in blind panic and is immediately removed(just as if it had been slain by the mumuk). Mounts which are also heros(such as Gwalihir)" Moving the Mumak - Pg 53

All you really needed to know was the last sentence where it says "mounts which are also heros(such as Gwalihir)" so that says Gwalihir is a mount and he does have 6 strength so is he a monstrous mount without a rider?

I found that as well. I was told that it was an out of date text from when he had been a monstrous mount, but that he wasn't anymore and the text just hadn't been updated.

Fellbeast is a MM and other profiles do state that other creatures, giant spiders, 'count as' MM when charging.
