I've always played that you can throw weapons as long as you're within 6" of the target. But reading the rules through again it says that you can only throw weapons at the enemy you are about to charge (well that's my interpretation anyway). So does that mean that you can only throw weapons if you can charge your opponent and when you do throw them do you have to charge the target if no kill is achieved? Please explain.

If you're throwing during the MOVE phase, then yes. You throw at the model you are charging. If you kill that model, and have movement left available, you can move into base to base with another model.

You can use throwing weapons in the Shoot phase also though. They have no movement restrictions like bows do. So you can move full, be within throwing range, and throw your weapon during the shoot phase.

my understanding is that you can do either but not both in a single turn.

so you may need to mark some models to remember if they already threw their spear while charging. those models won't shoot in the shoot phase of the same turn.

But if they charged they wouldn't be able to shoot anyway.
And say you were 11" away from your target, you move 6" so there is only 5" between you and the target. Are you still allowed to throw in the move phase even though you can't charge them?

sometimes you'll kill your opponent by the throwing spear and you won't have another reachable target to charge.

and no, you have to be able to attack the target first (within range), then when moving towards him stop just 1" before reaching him and throw, then move into charge if he's still alive. if he's killed then you can charge another target that's within the rest of your movement allowance for this turn.

hope it helps

So let's get this straight, no throwing weapons in the move phase unless you are going to engage them but you can still throw in the shoot phase.

You can throw in the move phase only if you're charging.
You can throw in the shoot phase only if you did not throw in the move phase, and only moved half.

Since it is possible to kill the model you're throwing at in the move phase and not reach someone else with the rest of your move, you have to track who threw so you do it correctly in the shoot phase.

I thought throwing weapons had no move penalty even if you throw them in th SP. It dosen't say anything about that in my rule book but perhaps it is out-dated.

Throwing weapons have no move penalty.

Otherwise, listen to whafrog, as he's pretty much right.

 A rule whafrog didn't know! :P
Yep, that's why I like throwing weapons, if he stays just out of charging range you can still move full tilt as close as possible and then pummel him in the shoot phase.

I meant that they move first and stop 15 cm's away from you so you can't charge them, then you move to within one cm and blast them with the daggers. 8)

I really like prowlers for there throwing daggers, if the opponent uses his extra movement to dance around you he will be getting thrown to pieces. 8)

Don't prowlers have the sucking shoot value of 5+ though?

Interesting. They seem to be worth their points especially as they have the backstabbers rule.

I've never used them myself as they weren't out yet when I still had my goblins. On paper they seem like they'd be worth it though.

They are very much worth the points. I often wonder why someone doesn't field a force of just prowlers. They're cheap as orcs, as good at fighting, better at shooting, have throwing weapons and a two special rules (cave dweller and backstabber).

Unfortunately at the UK GT they do, using regular goblins as 'count-as'. And if everybody is using them instead of normal goblins then their points cost doesn't match their profile.
