I started painting Burhdur tonight. I'm trying to take a number of photos during the process so that I can try write an article (assuming he comes out okay!). Here's the latest WIP photo -

Image

For what its worth, I've been applying the basecoat on the model with the new foundation paints. They really are outstanding to basecoat with. I'm still trying to get the hang on how to match colors on top of them and blend properly.

If all goes well, I'm going to try and finish him this week and potentially enter him in the GW painting contest this week. We'll see how much progress I make and how good or bad he turns out!

Looking good, Brent.

I'm just beginning to experiment with my Foundation paints as well. So far, they've been a joy to work with. Just have to figure out how the paints fit together.

yes, it's looking great already!
the grey ashy skin matches this troll perfectly.
they eyes make him look very 'alive' ...
For my taste the tongue is far too red at the moment (but it's only foundation paints you said.)

Thanks for all the kind words!! I had another productive night here and I've finished the painting of Burhdur. I'm quite pleased with how he turned out. (Sorry Beate - I didn't change his tongue at all, as I saw your post after I "finished". Maybe I'll try to mute it a bit).

Here he is - I'm really pleased with the final result.

I've got finish see if there are any minor touch-ups and then I'll get him sealed in a dull-cote to take away some of the glares of the ink washes and metallic paints. After that I'll finish up the base and he'll be ready to go. The contest deadline is Friday so I don't anticipate any problems getting him finished.

Great job!!

Only now, when you posted a picture form side I'm starting to think taht his pose is wierd, he looks like he's doing some stretch up :D

Anyway, technically very nice. It can be seen that now you're starting to get a hang of foundation paints. (I assume leather is painted with such).

Keep up the level!

I just love him!

of course not him, that ugly beast, but the way you've painted him. and added some good leather look at his arm protection (are the spikes horn or metal?).

(the reason why I was talking about the red tone of the tongue: if he has body parts where bright red blood circulates then e.g. lips of the inside of his mouth could not be bloodless... (though I am not an expert in Troll's anatomy and body functions ... ;-)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone - I'm still an amateur painter but I do think I'm improving. These larger models are also a bit easier to work with.

Now for some potentially bad news :? I finished some last touch-ups on the painting tonight (tried to fix the tongue, touched up the strap in the back and cleaned up a spot of skin where the paint chipped. I decided to go ahead and start to "seal" the model. Since this was first a foremost a gaming piece, I wanted to use a more protective coating - for my Rohan Army I used Krylon Triple Clear Glaze to provide a nice hard varnish (wonderful at preventing chipping) and then a couple coates of Dullecote matte varnish. However, on Burhdur, I think I was a bit over-zealous on the clear glaze!! I'm afraid that I may have put a bit too much on and it may have obscured the details... I'm very bummed... I just checked and hopefully its not as bad as I thought 20 minutes ago but only time will tell. Has anyone else ever had that feeling... "oh Devlan Mud, I just ruined my miniature!" Anyway, keep your fingers crossed that it comes out clear and not "cloudy". I'll snap pictures eitherway.

Oh man! I hope your mini comes out ok. I once put a similar product on a plaque I make. And the paint ran! :x Anyways, check out the Witch King in this thread:

[wipes forehead] I checked it again before going to bed. I don't think its nearly as bad as I originally thought :D I probably still put a bit too much clear coat on it but its certainly not ruined. [/wipes forehead]

Hey Brent...if you use the GW clear coat it goes on cloudy and then dries clear, I'm not sure how this Krylon Triple Clear Glaze appears when first applied, but sounds like it my be similar.

Glad to hear the troll is going to be ok! :D

Dave you were right - it dryed completely clear. The troll certainly isn't ruined. However, I was still a bit too over-zealous on the gloss coat :?

Here is the gloss coat photo and the subsequent dull cote. The coating certainly won't help my chances in the painting contest but I know the mini is protected

I also learned my lesson (hopefully!)
