I agree - I think that 4'x4' is too small.. I really like the quarter idea! Perhaps I will even build all 4 quarters, with scenarios spanning the different parts of the city. Great input everyone, I appreciate your help! I will get to work drafting a new blueprint, with labels this time.

Keep up the great teamwork!

I can certainly relate to your challenges in fitting enough buildings yet leaving room for streets - I'm struggling with the same with my Minas Tirith project (still in planning stage). I will have quite narrow streets (not wide enough for War of the Rings trays, for example), and will use something like OO railroad scale (1:76) with building windows & doors. They will be a bit undersized for the GW figures, but allow me to make a larger-looking city (and suit well for model railway environment where the city will be sitting most of the time). In addition, I will slightly reduce the size of the buildings on upper levels to create a forced perspective. In gameplay, I will substitute 1:72 figures for GW Minas Tirith warriors to man the upper level trebuchets (which will be in reduced scale, too).

The idea about having a quarter of a city on one board is good - I'm following a similar plan with my Isengard terrain, with the tower of Orthanc roughly in the intersection of four boards.

So it's been awhile, and consistent forum updates is something I now realize is not realistic.

Progress continues however! In the meantime, some teaser photos. Enjoy!

This board depicts part of the road to Gondolin after entering through the hidden gates. The mountains would be looming at your back as you walk it, with the city barely visible in the distance, its proud spires jutting above the foothills and woods before you.

An interesting choice for tree trunks. I'm intrigue as to how you will finish them. Do you plan for any texture on the tubes ?

The tree trunks are going to be textured and painted, yes. At the moment my plan is to use some sort of acrylic gel for the texture. The trees are cool because they actually insert into slightly larger tubes/holes buried inside the board itself. That way we can pull the trees out and reuse them on other boards as well! We bought enough tubing and moss for 200-300 trees - my dream of a heavily forested board is coming true!

Thanks Crucium!

i like the removable tree idea. could add a heavy tactical dimension to gameplay - the elves, terrified with the hordes of Morgoth fast approaching, set the forest aflame in an attempt to hold them off for longer. can't wait for more.

Board looks great. That tree dream is something, but I think that would be cool to see, a full forest board. But first things first, Gondolin is great so far.

Ever denser grow the trees surrounding the hidden city of Gondolin.

Another update!

We are at the stage on the forest board where we are ready to begin painting and adding texture to the tree trunks. Then all that will be left is pouring the resin waterfall/river and applying the static grass/ground cover.

Here are some photos to whet your appetite. Soon the construction of Gondolin shall begin in earnest...

A seemingly peaceful forest...

But here there be orcs!

Image
A view down the troubled road. The elf archer just left of center waiting behind the tree is my friend's new color scheme. We're excited to have an entire battalion painted that way!

Image
The mighty forest with well over 100 trees.

Image
The currently dry river and unpainted river bed.

Image
One of my favorite pictures so far.

Image
Another favorite. An elven battle line forms in the treeline.

The eagles are coming!

Stand fast!

The photos don't seem to be showing up. Make sure if you're using an image hosting website you are using the url to the images themselves and not the page their on.

Thanks Nevinsrip and IntLemon - the photos have been fixed. I had the file permissions set wrong.

Glad to hear you like the project SonsOfHurin! Hopefully you will have an even better idea of the vision now that you can see the photos.

Impressive, this is going to be an excellent board when you get it finished.

So it's been awhile...

Yet progress continues! We got a hold of some Hirst Arts molds and have been casting and planning. You can see in the new photos that we are playing with different arrangements on the forest board. We are especially excited to finish the bridge and road - with very realistic cobblestone!

It's really starting to take shape. More updates to come - soon hopefully!
