Hobbit SBG - Black Guard v Galadhrim and Rohan

This weeks battle saw Thomas field a Theoden led Rohan force with Galadhrim mixed in - a 600 point army to take on my 600 point Mordor Black Guard with shade and the Dark Marshal on armoured fell beast.

Easy pickings? one army would be victorious....

nice report ! Got to say, I thought rohan would be smashed because I did expect more from the black guard.. well

Wow, the evil army just kept on fighting but once their army was broken they just disintegrated... what a cool narrative!

I really wanted my Black Guard to hammer the good army, maybe some cheap Orc spear support will help in future!?

Nice to see the black guard loosing, as I don't like the idea of such powerful orc unit in Tolkien's Middle-Earth :wink:

Definetely! Or Morannons with spears cause you use spearman's S now for the supporter's roll to wound.
Mordor without spearblocks cannot use the numbers in an efficient way..

I have never seen Black Guard win a single match for me. The strength doesn't mean anything with these guys, may as well be a 2. Worst unit for Mordor for price to stat choices. better to choose a horde of lower orcs since 1 attack is 1 attack and if you need 5 or 6 to wound you may as well try for multiple dice to roll than trying to pay points to get a single wound to work better. I think the only way BG are effective is if you take a lot of them in a very high point match (1000) so you can still take numbers of other units and heroes, and hope to not have too many high fight values on the other side. at least from experience that is. Black Guard are not worth taking in a 500 point game.

1. Indeed, compare it with Black Numenoreans for example and see what you get for 3 less pts...

2.In a 500 pts match you dont want elites with every army, Mordor have so many better options. But in higher points you need some good punchers. A better solution for GotFC with D7 for example. So in some cases you are forced to use em (while you still cannot but you must consider this)..

I have played Morannon and normal orcs loads and seeing as I had the black guard just had to play them as a team, even if they do suck!

That is a good reason. I try to use all my units at least once in a army to try them out. The one thing I like about WotR was that it was easy to field high points and cram all those units in there and heroes too. I have tried BG a few times. Sometimes they almost seam like they are going to do well and then they fall apart. I am not sure if this is proof that SBG is pretty balanced, or just a curse of dice.

I think I would drop the extra strength to make a higher defense unit which in reality is what Mordor is lacking. We have d6 all day and numbers like you read about, but orcs lose fights and good guys eventually wear down the numbers with that single advantage f value (and courage after break). Someone thought a raw power orc would be cool at GW but we already had Uruks, those are cool enough. When you give an Uruk a big shield but the same D as a morannon orc, why? I would love to have seen the Strength of a mordor Uruk and 1 higher D than a morannon with shield. That would be worth paying for and would solve the "orcs should not be that strong" truth that people have brought up.
