Honestly, this topic is just to fish out what people find out there.

I dont care if you mention heroclix, or Hordes etc anything.

What do you guys think is one of the best/most fun and or inexpensive tabletops(no mention of this game).

Im very partial to actual soldiers and WW2. I know theres flames of war I think its called right? I never really looked into it.

Flames of War is awesome, but of course not as awesome as LOTR. I played it for a while, built up a substantial German force, and then lost interest after my local hobby shop stopped stocking it.

One thing it does have over our beloved SBG are the prices, which in my opinion are much more reasonable than the inflated prices of GW.

I think the company which produces it is NZ/Australian based, but has its largest following overseas.

Risk is cool too.

On the WW2 front, Bolt Action has a really cool mechanic, is reasonably simple to play (about the same as SBG) and not too expensive to get in to.

Infinity is a good fast going game where you actually play in your opponents turn and never get bored. You don't need that many models and all the rules are available online for free.

Nuts! is one of the best WWII rulesets around. Ideal for small to mid-sized games, you can start with a single squad of men and even play on your own.

Currently, my favourite skirmish game is Saga - it is a simple yet deep system that takes 5 minutes to learn and many many games to master. You will need at most 30 models and a single box of plastic Saxons will suffice for your warband. There are variations for Samurai, Middle-Ages, even LOTR.

Other very cool games that have low model counts - Malifaux, Bushido, Carnavale, Force on Force. The choices are many and the quality is very high (generally).

I am a Bushido "Retainer", although I haven't played in a long while now. Nice game, with beautiful figures. I know they're growing in the states, but getting involved will definitely require enthusing the local scene about the game (not hard, because it's not too expensive, and the models are great and really cool).

Infinity I played for a long while. It's cheap to get in to, but you end up spending a fortune because the models really are that amazing, and learning the game is a process of working out that all the stuff you bought initially was rubbish, and you want a whole new set of shiny toys!
Eventually though, I gave up because the game is just too complex, and the rules are totally out of the control of the developers. The level of detail, different types of weapon, different profiles for each troop type and the dizzying amount of special rules and equipment means that the FAQ is something like four times longer than the rules themselves. The rules interact in unexpected and bizarre ways, leading many many grey areas, and complicated situations that are very difficult to resolve.
The background is awesome, and the basic mechanic is very interesting and dynamic. But it's like playing an RPG where you control 10 characters at once, and there's no GM.
The game has a lot going for it, but it desperately needs a second edition, and a massive rules cleanup.

I'll second SAGA, all you need to play is two 25 model armies (average size of a 4 points list) and the basic rulebook (which has rules, scenarios and four armylists). Several armies can be made from 1 or two plastic sets (which are very cheap), most of them if you don't mind a bit of kitbashing. At the bigger normal playing size (6 points) you will at most need 57 models for the horde armies, but 37 is the average number. Rules are great too, allow for very varied games even when playing the exact same scenario with the very same armies.

One really cheap (but fun) game is the Star Wars miniatures game. I used to play it all the time

. Astarter set with everything needed to play (for 2 players) will run you around $40 USD. Grab a couple boosters for great variation. And if u get into it I can recommend one superb "house rule" that takes the game from "good" to "great"

Monopoly, Risk and other boardgames are relatively cheap and can be a good laugh, especially with the right mix of participants.

Sure, for the "house rule" simply remove any kind of army limitations. I believe in the rules somewhere it limits your army size. Just do away with that, pick a leader, grab some troops and go at it! Also the shooting around corners mechanic is great! Really makes cover worth taking and flanking very important. There is no "maximum range" for most weapons so placing 2+ of the battle-mats together makes for great fun as well as it increases the tactical options. Also be sure to include the rules for destroying doors etc. I'm not sure they're in all the manuals (as I think it was introduced for a special scenario) but they're defense 11 HP 40. There's nothing more fun than watching a giant Utapau Bird burst through a door, devour General Grievous and then fly off lol
