Time for a little dwarven update! Had a productive week and managed to get another two of the compnay done, snuck in Kili at the end of October (he was already base coated so ineligible to enter the Warband painitng challenge) and then did Balin this week. I'm entering a Thorin's Company hero warband into the competition so I need to get at least 4 done throughout November, that's 1 a week - I'm on track for the moment!

Really pleased with how they both turned out, two more gorgeous models to work with, the detail in these Hobbit figures is simply stunning and I really enjoyed painting them. When you're working with plastic models that have both top AND bottom eyelids (like Balin) I really don't think we need Finecast anymore - fingers crossed for an all-plastic DOS range! I had a go at NMM on Balin's sword as a bit of an experiment, not entirely convinced by the result to be honest so I may revisit it at a later date, any tips/advice would be very welcome!

Finishing Balin was also an important psychological milestone - I've now finished 7/13 dwarves - I'm over halfway through the company! This has been a great motivator for me, I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully the Warband challenge will motivate me to keep it up and get them all finished before Christmas.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, I haven't updated in a few weeks as I did all the bases on the following models at the same time so they weren't finished!

Still, I've been busy (if not quick) working away on the company and can now present Balin, Dori, Nori and Ori, my entry for this month's painting competition. They're all great figures and I had a blast painting them, hope you like!

I'm making good progress now with 10/13 dwarves done. I'm going to have a slight break next week and try and get Azog Mounted done, I'm looking forward to painting him as he's a stunning figure but I'm a bit worried about painting all that white so any help would be much appreciated! I'm hoping to play some Hobbit scenarios over Christmas and need the main antagonist after-all! Hopefully I'll get the remaining 3 dwarves done too but if I have to take the company to war without Bifur or Bofur it won't be the end of the world.

Just got to stay strong and not get distracted by all the GORGEOUS new DOS elves!

So as I said in my last post my next project was meant to be Azog Mounted but as it turned out he took a few nights to get ready as I had to leave time for glue to dry and green-stuff to cure etc. However, he's now ready for the paintbrush and I hope to start on him over the weekend.

However, not wanting to lose out on a few nights of unitnterupted painting (the wife was out), I dug out Bifur from the carry case where he's been languishing since *scrolls through WIP thread* mid-August (!!!) in a state of base coated and shaded shame. Not quite sure what happened to poor Bifur, he was on my 'first 6 dwarves to paint' list but fell behind as various painting challenges required unstarted models - poor guy!

Anyway, a couple of evenings' work and I was able to finish him off, pretty pleased with him again to be honest, fits in well with the rest of the company. A lot of brown on this model but it was fun trying to differentiate between the various shades.

Right, next up it's definitely Azog, or maybe Fili :-)

I've also got a free painting evening next Friday after an afternoon showing of DOS and I can't imagine how I'm going to resist making a start on Beorn or Tauriel having just come out of the film

As always, we'll just have to wait and see where the paintbrush takes me!

The warm brown contrasts well with the cold grey shades of his hair and beard. Great job! I like him in shades of brown actually. Haven't done mine yet. I'm painting the dwarves I don't really want to paint first, then finishing with Bifur, Bofur and Bombur (who I really do want to paint!).

Thanks Mertall, much appreciated! Have fun painting Bombur, it's a great model, I wasn't particularly looking forward to doing him but fell in love with the figure as I did it. It's oozing with character and very different to the other dwarves.

So it's time for another little update, I managed to get Fili done and I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out:

I have to admit, Fili probably wins the award for 'worst dwarf model in the company' for me but I still enjoyed painting him up and he fits in pretty well with the others.

That only leaves Bofur to do (SO nearly there!) but I'm afraid he'll have to wait as I've (finally!) started on Azog! I've loved this figure since I first saw it and have been itching to get him painted up, as I mentioned before I'm playing a bunch of Hobbit scenarios over Christmas and need him more than I need Bofur - Thorin will just have to be one dwarf down!

He's still got a long way to go but I thought I'd post a little WIP pic of him here to keep you all going! So far his skin's just about done but nothing else, it's taken a long time though and I'm really pleased with how he's looking, as I mentioned I was really worried about painting all the white but I think the skin's come out well. I'm going to attempt to finish 'him' tonight and then move on to the Warg where I'm, again, already panicking about the white! Hope to have pics of him finished up by Friday!

Fantastic work on the dwarves. Don't panic about the warg you'll do a grand job i'm sure. Are you planning on working from grey with him? If so may I suggest starting from fortress grey instead of codex grey. I started from codex and it was too dark, took an age to get it back light enough to turn the beast white.

The skin on the warg I believe is very difficult, but you have done it fantastically well. Saying that though,your painting is coming along so well I am expecting this standard from you.

The White Warg is not entirely white anyway - there are some stripes around the neck area and there may be more - it breaks up the possible monotony and adds interest.

WETA did a 1:6 scale version but the dark markings are not apparent here - maybe they missed something

Hey guys, thanks for all the supportive comments, it means a lot, particualry coming from such great painters!

@DMS - cheers for the advice, it would have been a really handy tip had I not read it a few minutes after covering the Warg in Codex Grey! :shock:

Anyway, I've had a productive few days and he's now finished (apart from his base) so I thought I'd post a pic for C&C. I'm pretty happy overall, very pleased with how Azog came out, particulalry his skin. As for the Warg, whilst it was as tricky as I expected, I think overall he looks looks pretty good - even if he is arguable the Pale Grey Warg rather than the White Warg!

Once I've done his base I'll try to take some better pics and upload them to the painting challenge.

No worries on the Warg it looks excellent and dare I say that pale grey looks more realistic than bright white?

Nicely done. I think that Azog on the White Warg is very difficult to pull off. Such a large white area without much to contrast it with makes it difficult to balance visually (like Gandalf the White on Shadowfax). I think you've done an excellent job here. Can't wait to see it when you've finished it!
